This lady slipper is one of three that come back every year. I know of another spot that has about a half dozen within 100 yards of each other. It’s a native orchid that is endangered in every state that it is found.
I don’t know, I’m in NJ and from checking on the internet, was able to learn that they are endangered in every state, including Ohio. Several states where they used to exist haven’t had any confirmed sightings in years. The article said that they are so tough to grow, that they have had very little success growing them in lab conditions.
I just googled them to see if they would be in my area. From what I read it is just urban legend that they are rare, but are actually quite common in their core range. Who knows what to believe on the internet!!! Lol
There is a nature preserve close to me that has a flooded fen with lots of rare protected orchids. It's ran by the Ohio historical society and has a boardwalk. Anyone that wants to see them can visit. Pretty cool little flower. I have never seen one in the wild though, thanks for sharing.
