Seeing Cspots thread about poor man food plots got me thinking of these no till secret spot food plots.... Come August when I go out to Illinois to hang stands I was thinking of taking a weed wacker to a few small spots and taking it down to bare dirt, then loosening up the dirt with a bow rake and throwin down some seed... Don't have time to spray weed killer. So my question is: Is it worth the effort or am I wasting my time??? And what seed do you guys think might work....THANKS

How secluded is the area you’re thinking? You thinking kill plot or just to better the wildlife? I guess I just need some more info on what you really want out of it.

Dave... Putting them in areas where I hunt... Just something to keep the deer interested as its all soy bean this year... Seems once the soy bean turns brown the deer move on... Chad thinking of Pike County where we hung camera in that strip and also where I found last shed in the area I told you to check for a tree and there was a shed.... As far as John having a tiller... Way too BIG to trailer down there... Also thinking of something North of town where we checked out along river....

Me neither, figured he might do it [emoji23]

LOL..... THATS FUNNY.... Between court and feeding cows and mending fences and working on the honey do list hes lucky to have time to take a dump.... Just thought I'd try something for shits and giggles.... Guys that do food plots out there want a ton of money.... I'm hoping the acorn crop is good this year in Pike... Man its 2 months since we were out there....

I'd do some winter wheat down on that path by the trail you cut.

Would it be productive for 1st half of Nov.... I was thinking maybe Austrian Peas..... But they may wipe them out as soon as they come up.... Maybe the neighbor down there will have corn... I think that spot we hung camera in is going to be HOT,,HOT,,HOT.....

Dave,, Yeh I hear ya on a good plot taking years to establish... But ya read about these no-till plots and it gets you wondering.... Worst case scenario is you wasted maybe a days labor and $50 worth of seed... Oh... And a cooler full of beer, which isn't a waste....

Hard to argue with that logic😂.

I wouldn’t waste my money on a fancy bag though. Go buy some clover seed and frost seed the hell out of the area next year while shed hunting.

I made what I call a micro plot it was about 10x10, or of whatever I could buy cheap at Tractor Supply, I raked of all the leaves in the area with a gravel rake to help scratch the ground, heavy seeded and walked on it to help push into the gound, and watered, it didn't do to bad, I also put a $10 food block beside it, to help out. Never killed one in that spot, but you could tell they were there. Gonna try again this year.

Winter wheat will stay green all fall and winter when nothing else will.

You can actually spray the day you plant. Gly only kills the green stuff. Not the seed. I would probably wait and let the spray dry before spreading the seed.

I would go with winter wheat or winter rye. You could even mix some oats in. That would be my recommendation to get some good fall growth.

As an additional note make sure your spray is only gly. I know there are some round-up products that are made to kill stuff for a long period of time. They have something else that prohibts plant growth for a while in the soil. Your standard gly does not have that.
