I showed up Thursday afternoon right at 6. Originally we were supposed to be staying in campers on one of the coordinators property. Campers fell through. Then they were going to put us on cots in the barn, cots fell through, so we ended up crashing in their living room. I took a portion of the sectional couch. More guys showed up, we met everyone, got my tag and patterned my shotgun. The Winchester Longbeard XR's grouped better than the Remingtons. Got up at 345 on Friday morning, hooked up with my guide and headed out. Got set up in a field in a blind and woke up with Mother Nature. Overcast skies. We waited a while before the guide started calling. It took a while but we finally got an answer. There was a Tom behind us, across the creek. He never would cross over. So we went after him. We crossed the creek and saw 2 jakes in the field, about 200 yards away. We never did see the Tom, he hung up in the woods. We headed into the woods, called a few times and didn't get a response. Done for the morning. At this point my knees and feet were killin me. Went back to the house, cracked a beer and watched some lady ruin 30 racks of ribs throughout the day. Around 2:30 I headed back out with a different guide. This time Im out with the homeowner. Very nice guy, has a stutter, and has only been turkey hunting 3X before. We walked about 400 yards before we finally got into an area where we set up against a few trees, no signs of turkey on that property on the walk in. Called a few times, no response. waited around for about an hour or so, then we called it, now my back was starting to feel it. As we were walking out, we crested a hill about 30 yards from where we were sitting and off to my left I saw a hen that was headed in our direction, as soon as she saw us, she bolted. Back to the house we go. Beer and burnt fuckin ribs. Tough as leather. I chose to eat other stuff that was lying around. Called it an early night, in bed around 10. Got up Saturday morning, back out with a different guide, different property. Heard a gobbler, never saw him. Nobody on that trip scored a bird. Oh well, that's hunting. We had a good time, cold beer, shitty ribs, fishing and hunting. I left their place around noon. Called Giles since I knew I was close. Hooked up with him and his family at his daughter Maddie's soccer game. I got an invite to go back to their camper about 45 minutes away for the night. Wife isn't expecting me home until Sunday, so yeah Ill tag along. After the game we went out for some grub, then headed to the camper. Beer and bacon wrapped venison, and family time around the camp fire. Id call it a very successful weekend. I woke up around 5:45 Sunday morning and headed to the house. The wife wasn't expecting me until later in the day, but with it being Mothers day, I knew it was important to the wife that I was there when they went to the grave site to visit her mother. Other than the shitty ribs, it was a good weekend. Sometimes the gathering isn't about the hunt, even though no one got anything, everyone gained a lot.
