I saw a post and picture from you quite some time ago about retrieving beagles. I have been either extremely lucky or blessed, since I have had 2 out of the 3 beagles I have owned that retrieved; both of them males and both retrieved every rabbit they got to first since they were very young. Neither of these dogs hunted with each other since the first one died before the other one was born. I noticed that you said that you really didn't "train" yours to do this, my experience is the same. I've hunted with several guys that said they would love to have their dog/s do this, but I really couldn't tell them how. One characteristic that stands out about my first retriever is that he was a "pleaser", nicest dog you would ever meet. My second one was related to him, so maybe it is in the genes??? All that I know, as I'm sure you do as well, is that it has come in very handy in a lot of situations. I have some great stories/memories about this.
