That's awesome Brock! Sounds like you guys needed to just get out and relax and have some fun hunting. Also what kind of camera are you filming with it has amazing quality!

It's nothing fancy, a small Sony Handycam that KR bought me several years ago. I have drug that thing around for several seasons now and it has been perfect for what we do. Small and easy to operate in a hurry.

Love the update Brock. Back when I first started hunting and had all kinds of room to roam, I used to hunt like this as well. It's a lot of fun. It's awesome to see you two getting out and having fun together.

Jesse, I still have room to roam. I am fortunate in that regard. I was never a fan of sitting over a pile of corn until my hunting turned more to taking Mason out than actually hunting myself. Unfortunately, he has come to believe in order to see deer there needs to be stand(s) or blinds set up over a pile of corn or apples. I want to get him away from that line of thinking. That is a good way to kill 'em, but I never felt like it was really hunting. Obviously, I'm not opposed to it, but it just isn't the rich experience that a person gets from actually hunting. He is old enough now to be sneaky, and I'm trying to teach those skills. I don't know why, but I've always been really good at getting close to game with both feet on the ground and before my time on Earth is up, I want him to enjoy it too. He actually said this past weekend that we only had one set up to hunt! I looked at him like he was nuts and decided it was time he learned... it's been a blast so far.

When I walk in the woods with others, I am constantly amazed at how loud they are. Even at 200 pounds with a size 13 boot, I can sneak pretty well. I've always contributed it to being 1/16 Shawnee. That, and my dad spend a lot of time teaching me how to be quiet when I walked. It's a skill that can be learned, but I also believe some folks just have a talent in that regard.

I'll agree with you there, Jesse. My buddy, Jon, was that way. We hunted and fished together since we were 7 years old. Once we started bow hunting and knew nothing about tree stands, we just sneaked around. I was constantly getting after Jon to slow down, what's the rush, toes first... all that stuff. He just couldn't do it. It wasn't until he was older that he got the knack for it. One of my memorable ground hunts was many years ago. I don't know if you remember or if I even told you that story, but it was a good one. I snuck up on one in it's bed during shotgun season. 11 steps. Sent a pic via my phone to Haleybrock. He asked if it was dead and I replied "Not yet". I put the phone in my pocket and shot the deer. Sent him a pic of the body... haha. That was awesome! I'm sure I've just been lucky, but it's better to be lucky than good.

:smiley_clap:

This is sooooo true! How awesome it is that he is learning from his buddy, mentor and father! Great memories being made and learning different hunting techniques along the way!

This is another reason why I found and prepared that spot for us to hunt on top of that highwall along the east side of that creek bed! I don't want K to think you always have to be in a tree to kill or observe deer. It's more about keeping your movements to a minimum, seeing them long before they see or smell you and keeping the wind in your favor.

Looking forward to seeing how both of your seasons progress! Good luck to you both!

We had a great hunt Sunday evening. Mason went to my old trusty fencerow stand up in Fayette Co, I snuck around. I saw about a dozen or so, only one small buck. Mason saw 30+, four bucks, with the biggest being 130 ish. He never fired a shot. He said if he had just shot a squirrel or something, it would have been the best hunt of his life. :)

Tonight, my buddy Lathe brought his 7 year old daughter up for her first squirrel hunt. We sent Mason off to the fencerow stand again as we headed off to shoot squirrels. We shot a few, saw one small buck too, before Ryanne lost interest. Finished up the evening glassing Mason's position as deer walked by his stand. Again, no shots fired. He saw 7 or 8 tonight. Good clean fun, no mess.
