Welcome back Mike.

I'm sure there are plenty of great outdoorsman who don't log onto hunting forums. FB groups show me there are plenty of people hunting who don't represent hunters very well. I finally took my 2013 and 2014 bucks to get scored for OBB. I will attend the banquet open minded. I have a feeling it will be a convention of people talking and measuring their manhood. I will experience it once at least. If it is a bunch of narcissistic jerks I will never register another. Again, I will attend with an open mind.

I have a feeling Mike is referring to the number of people at these banquets who may never consider logging in.

I think you'll enjoy yourself Phil. The only complaints I've ever heard center around the time it takes to get through the reading of the certificates mixed in with gun raffles. The deer head display is second to none!

I have a feeling Mike is referring to the number of people at these banquets who may never consider logging in.

Again. Nobody was talking about them in the statement he disagreed with. I clearly stated.

"The knowledge of individuals on forums far surpasses that of any other gathering of hunters you will ever find"

The knowledge of hunters gathered at a banquet exists for such a short period and is not available for consumption by the masses rendering it therefor largely useless. While rex may personally know a lot of these people thus making that knowledge available to him outside of the banquet hall, the overwhelming majority of hunters do not. Therefor i will say it again.

Thanks for clearing that up Joe. I didn't realize that reach, dwell time and ability for human consumption was a criteria for evaluating a "gathering of hunters?" I thought we were just taking about a group of people who have lots of experience with and are good at killing things...and occasionally get together. Again, the majority of those guys don't want you to know what they know.

Using your definition, we should probably consider the OWA...Outdoor Writers Association. These guys do assemble from time to time and their writing in newspapers, magazines and internet blogs certainly touches the masses. As a former OWA member, I can say from experience that the problem with anointing them crem dela crem is that most struggle to kill time...

Knowledge of something doesn't necessarily mean you're good at that thing... Let alone the best. Look at at the sports broadcasters and commentators, and writers as Mike mentioned, that have never even played the sport or played it very little.

I can read until I'm blue in the face, become an intellectual expert in space travel, and still never be an astronaut.

I don't disagree on the time and energy statement. But for bandwidth we have unlimited inbound and 5Tb outbound a month. Thats 5,120 gb outbound. The horse on the other hand is looking a little pulverized, he may not last lol.

I'm going to guess that Giles and Tall Chad use 5,000 gb of that 5,120 each month

not that I completely agree with everything Jim has said, but I do think I understand what he is talking about when it comes to elite outdoorsman. There is probably no statistical way to define it other than a expression used by Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart "But I know it, When I see it". Now Justice Stewart was referring to porn, but I believe this is just as important and can be used in a similar way. I used to fish with a guy that I swear to god would become 1 with the lure! No one would be catching a thing and Dave would have his limit of walleye +2 and this was always consistent. Fishing I feel is easier to separate the turds, average, above average and elite, I would guess majority of us probably fall under above average in multiple categories. but the truly bad mofo's that seem to constantly tear it up in my area - hog limits of walleye consistently, killing 140 plus deer almost annually, etc, etc- are really selfish ass holes that literally spend little time with their own children for their pursuit of game. Now am sure there are some bad mofo's that are great family men and this isnt an overall consistent across the board, but the few that I know typically carry the selfish trait.

I don't disagree with that in the least however you're argument as applied is based on a flawed assumption. You can apply that statement to some people, but not all people. To prove that point I'll even give you a huge ludacris number to apply that to and say 50% of those here despite putting in the years and having the benefit of the Internet never learned a thing. Complete boneheads. That is still 3,888 years of cumulative deer hunting knowledge in one place. I'll even go a step further. Let's assume we did a new poll and it dropped the average in half, AND half of them don't know shit. That is still 1944 years of cumulative deer hunting knowledge in one spot. By your logic as long as someone exists somewhere else that is more knowledgable, then here cannot contain the cream of the crop regardless of how many years experience exists.

You are trying to apply the cream of the crop statement to the top 1% of hunters and say that since they don't exist here this is not the cream if the crop. You're arguing a subjective point which neither of us can prove out with data. What i can show is a cumulative 7,000+ years of deer hunting knowledge in one place. And no matter which way you slice the pie that counts for something.

I would agree with you about the outdoor writers association if 95% of what they wrote wasn't elaborate marketing pieces. In the eyes of most hunters with any common sense they have zero credibility regardless of their personal success. Their credibility only goes as far as the editors desk and is beheld to those who wrote this months advertisement check.

Try sending this to North American Whitetail.

Trophy Rock is a product that is largely overpriced salt, better alternatives can be made at home with a simple trip to TSC.

ScentLoc, while a quality garment is largely marketing hype, try using smoke and playing the wind to save hundreds of dollars.

Imperial Whitetail Clover pound per dollar is no better than clover seed scooped from a plastic tote at your local seed store.

Most people read those articles looking for an entertaining story. If they want the truth like Winchester XR vs Hevi shot Magnum Blend pattern they google it, not sign up for a subscription to Guns & Ammo.

Fun fact. If you google "Winchester XR vs Hevi shot Magnum Blend pattern" the top three results are forums. Then a field and stream blog post, then the remainder of the page 1 results are forum posts. Even Google puts more stock in user generated forum content than they do staff writers.

Holy Shit!

Let me put it this way. If I have a question about planting a food plot or opinions on a brand of treestand, I would value the opinion more of someone on here than I would the hunter I see at the parking lot at the game lands, the guy working at Cabelas, or what I read in some deer hunting magazine. This is especially true after being on a forum for a while and reading people's posts. You can tell who has knowledge and who is a BS'r.

I stand by my assertion that the average guy on here is a better hunter than the average hunter out there. Not saying we have a group of Fred Bear's running around here, just saying on average the hunters on here are better. Of course this thread may be proving this wrong.

Slow golf clap...

I knew I'd miss all the great info on this site. Guess I wasted my $98.02 I spent on Trophy Rocks this morning.

I sometimes miss the info, but these threads, not even a little bit.

Ya $98 would of bought a lot of brown trace mineral blocks and stock salt from TSC, I personally made the switch.

I just put out one block of salt and one block of trace mineral to about 3 weeks ago or so. The deer really seem to be hammering it as well from the tc video's I've been getting. Mostly does though(same 4-5 every other day or so) and occasionally 2 small shed bucks once a week or so.
