Mason and I put one to bed after our evening hunt tonight. We heard this guy gobbling from a LONG ways up the creek. I thought I knew where he was so we jumped in the truck, made a quick drive to another property and there he was. Mason got him going calling with his voice and owl hooting. Hope it's a quickie, he has school in the morning.

Looking forward to an early morning read Brock! Best of luck to you and Mason.

Before heading to the truck Mason filled his time whittling a stick with a knife Geezer gave him. Found some more pheasant backs too. Spring is grand.

I love it when we have time, Aaron. It's always special to hear one in the afternoon. Seems like you never will, but then you do!

Quiet morning. First day all season that I never heard a single gobble. It's also the first time that I was not able to work a bird this yr but not complaining! Only used 1 hr of vacation too, lol....it was definitely one of those mornings where they just didn't want to be normal, lol...

Yesterday I called in a bunch of hens with this bird gobbling on the ridge above us. Today, we set up on the ridge, thinking he would stroll right out the ridge and into the field we were setting on. He did, but had one old hen with him that apparently wanted to stay just inside of the woods, skirting the corner of the field we were in. I thought at any moment we would see his head pop out, it didn't. He went right around us through a wooded finger and came into the field on the other side. Mason and I snuck around the finger. Once I saw them I popped up a "chicken on a stick" and crawled toward them. When he saw the deke, he puffed up and gobbled. Mason, knowing he was short on time, decided to try gaining ground quick. He took the decoy and started walking toward them when they slipped into a depression in the field. The hen was off to the side and figured him out as he was walking. Game over. Still, it wasn't a bad way to spend a little time before school.

This was the only bird we heard gobbling this morning also. I suspect we are getting close to these old boys running completely out of girlfriends and becoming really susceptible to a few calls. It's about time for the long-spurred birds to start hitting the ground.

In the span of about 10 miles I saw 5 bearded big boys, 2 of which I had to slam on the brake to keep from killing.. I thought about hitting the gas instead

No luck for me this morning. I got out at 9. I jumped some deer out of the woods that ran into the field and made 2 birds gobble. They were within 100 yards of me and they didn't want to play. About 10:45 I packed up and headed for the truck, got down to the field and heard a gobble up in the woods. I quickly turned around and ran back up, jumped a hen out of the alfalfa that was apparently laying down hiding when I went by the first time. Heard one more gobble from a different bird after I set up again then nothing. I left at 11:45. These birds I've been after seem unkillable. Fuggers won't come to calls, hopefully that'll all change within the next few days.

Almost blasted a groundhog while I was at the truck getting dressed... 30 yards from me looking away, pulled out the shotgun, loaded it and pulled up, aimed, clicked the safety off.....
And have him a pass as I didn't want to make my presence known lol... Next time I won't be so forgiving lol...

We pulled in to glass the fields last night and as soon as the truck entered the field two were 200+yards away and hauled ass another 200 yards across the remaining field.... Not a good sign that'd they spook like that... Just seeing a truck...
