LIVE from the stand 2018-19

I've trying to find black squirrels since I moved out here! Congrats.
Shot 2 in Summit County when I lived out there. Saw way more fox than anything though and pretty sure blacks are mostly a variant of gray squirrels. Got a few pin drops in the Allegheny National Forest if your ever willing to drive for one lol. I prob shot a dozen or so when I lived up there.

Allegheny National Forest is one of the main areas I grew up hunting...Fall turkey and rifle season. Great memories there.

I saw another black squirrel...that’s about it. 4:40 49 year old neighbor to my south was riding laps on his 11 acres in his UTV. 5:10 and 5:33 neighbor two doors down to my north on 5 acres dumps pistol clips. What the hell do they shoot at at dark let alone know what’s behind their intended target? A typical hunt on my 12.5 acre suburban parcel. Back to work.

I absolutely loved it up there. If I could make the money I make now up there I would have never left. I lived in Mckean right outside Bradford. The hunting is surreal if you no what your doing. Some absolutely brute bucks are taken up there every year and I would be willing to compare it to anywhere else in the country for massive whitetail just most guys like me had no clue how to hunt it. I knew quite a few guys that pulled 150"+ year after year. The bonus being the grouse population and bear population are some of the highest in the country and the reservoir is stocked full of great fishing.

Settled in for round two for the day.
There are bucks bedded across that creek, I just know it!

Now I hope they decide to get up early and make thier way towards me to show off their racks.

The winner may just get an arrow ;)

Good luck guys!

Five deer total for the day

Two does this evening.

I keep hearing something in the wooded area just to my east.

Whatever it was never made it out into the open field during legal time, so I packed it up and headed home.

Good night 'TOO' GANG!

Climbed back up into our favorite stand on farm midday at 12:30. About 20 minutes in I saw a deer I would have shot if given the chance headed straight for me about 75 yards out. Grabbed my camera and bow and started videoing. I think a few gusts of wind from straight out of the EAST is what stopped him from committing. The wind most of the day I’m my area of the SW was SE-S and some SW but occasionally it would push at my back from the east.
To be continued......

That’s neat to hear. Times have changed. When I was a kid, breaking 120 was almost unheard of. This was way back before antlers restrictions, and a deer population that was through the roof. I shot my first buck out of a herd...yes a herd...of at least 40 deer. We would watch them come through on deer drives and say to whoever you were on stand with: “doe, doe, Buck, take him”. And back then I think maybe penn State was doing experiments on the land, with high fences to keep deer out of areas that they had timbered. It’s a beautiful area, lotta big woods. Far from lights so u can really see stars before that first center fire shot rings across the hollow.

Funny you guys talk about that! Been going up do deer camp in ANF near Hearts Content for a few days during opening week of rifle for the quite a few years. Love it. It's so different than here. Haven't killed a buck in a while but, always hoping. Need to do a bit more scouting on the ridge but, getting out there is a trip and time is scarce with the family. Good country there! Always see some guys with good deer on the poles!

Anywho, I grabbed my video camera and bow and tried my best to video and get into position if I needed to shoot. He locked up about 40 yards out due west and stayed in cover. A critter scurried across the leaves and he came unglued but stopped and came back to about 35 yards after he realized what it was but he still wouldn’t commit yet and come on past. After another 5-10 minutes of checking things out he had enough and turned tail and left for good but didn’t appear to be boogered too bad. After viewing the tape I’m glad I didn’t get a shot. I got into kill mode alittle too prematurely and over estimated him a bit. His left brow was busted off also. Nice solid up and comer that just got more educated.😬
Prolly grosses 125-130 but still a great hunt and encounter. I saw 6 more doe tonight and another buck that was 2.5 old that did give me a shot opportunity.
