That’s a good one! I’ve had the ramp slip off before, always used that strap after that. Luckily I was unloading and just unloaded a little faster then my liking.

Yeah in the boaters world, it’s called a quick or short launch. My buddy did that’s couple years ago when his bunks were frozen. Hit the brakes before getting to the water and boat slide right off lol. On stepper launches I don’t undo the bow till I’m at the water.

Gun season is upon us again, wear your orange and know where everyone in your party is at! Communication is the key to success in this case. We have a rule about blood trailing, no one does it till a regroup happens. Either for lunch or nightfall, no tracking starts till everyone is aware. We used a group text last year and that worked pretty well.

I need safety lines for getting in and out of my buddy stands with Greyson, no doubt. Wasn't anything i thought about, and i failed him in that respect, no excuses.

Glad u guys mentioned gutting. For some of you that don't know, 3 years ago on extra gun weekend, i was helping a budy gut a deer. I wasn't standing normally how i would after i grabbed the knife from him. It slipped from the rib, and punctured the large vein on the side of my wrist behind my thumb. I didn't even know it went through my skin. Just felt like a bump. Then my buddy 6 feet away started freaking out cuz my blood was spraying him. Luckily we were close to the road, and i was able to stay calmer than everybody else. I applied direct pressure as I had my buddy remove my belt and fashion a tourniquet. 80 mph down backroads to the hospital. Luckily we walled it off and i didnt need a vascular surgeon.

With all that being said, have a plan, and atleast know how to do basic first aide, and try to remain calm in emergencies. And if your alone and something bad happens, get pissed and dont let despair take over. So much of survival is about human will

Nothing worse about being in a blind when you hear branches cracking behind you and not sure if it will hit you or not. Had that happen one time but it wasn’t close enough to hit. At least with a tree stand you can see. Lol

I lived that an hour after I posted that. LOL

The wind had laid down, then it sounded like a freight train rolling through. I could hear it way off at first and it rolled up on me like tsunami! I grabbed ahold of the blind as it lifted up off the platform, then the branches and trees started falling. I let go of the blind and covered my head. After a few seconds of chaos, I decided it was a good time to bail! Ended up bumping my #1 on the way out, so I tried to cut him off. Found one of the trees that fell during that big gust. I have a 16" locust to clean up out of that food plot now.

Funny you bring this up, I was just thinking the same the other day. I'm thinking, how does someone FALL out of their stand. I've sat on plenty of benches in my time and not once did I fall off onto the ground.....well,...sober that is. A tree stand is just a bench in my opinion.

The fall doesn’t happen while just sitting there...and just because something never happened to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. That’s just plain ignorance that’ll get a fella hurt. I’ve never had a seatbelt save my life, doesn’t mean I don’t need it.

I don't think people simply fall out of tree stands very often. they fuck up climbing up or down or getting on or off of the platform. still, if you've ever hunted 30-40 days in a row you know how easy it is to fall asleep standing up in a tree stand.

Aren't most falls when people transition onto/off of their platform? Also stands breaking in some way is another big reason, that's how I fell years ago. Then you also hear of some that have fallen asleep in their stands, I'd venture to say every one of us has dozed off and had that feeling.

I had a step on a new ladder stand break as I was climbing a few years ago. The weld broke on one side of the step with all my weight on the one foot. It sort of bent down slowly and I had a lifeline and harness so I was fine but it scared the shit out of me.

Ice, bad straps, parts of treestand breaking as you climb, falling asleep, taking a bad step in the dark... lots of ways to get hurt bad using a treestand regardless of your confidence. Wear a harness.

Foot step went thru his calf muscle and tree saw split his head wide open. I'll see if I can find the old thread or video and post it.

Some here will remember about 4 years ago I decided to take a swim out of a kayak while retrieving a duck in the middle of a gravel pit in December. The kayak was worthless as flotation once filled with water and my lifejacket that was behind the seat was hung up as a strap got tangled. To be honest I was wearing so many heavy clothes it likely wouldn't have kept me above water anyway though. I spent about 15 minutes holding on to a sunken kayak trying to stay above water with 5 layers of clothes on and knee-high boots until my FIL could paddle a rowboat out to save my bacon. In that time I had made it maybe 3/4 of the way back to shore, but was still screwed as I would have been stopped by the 20 yards of ice around the edge

The ER doc told me that I was incredibly lucky that I didn't drown, but it was an absolute miracle that hypothermia didn't kill me. He said people just don't survive that length of exposure submerged to their neck in that cold.of water. Besides your FIL he asked, howd you do it. I told him I got mad, I refused, I fought. I told him that I immediately realized I was screwed and my odds of surviving were slim. My thoughts in an instant turned to my family, the call they would receive, their grief, my family at my funeral, how this will forever scar their lives. All of that in what was probably 2 seconds went through my mind. I got mad at the thought of it, and when I say mad I mean it was a resolve that only someone facing death but refusing to allow it could have. Interestingly enough however I don't recall ever fearing my own death, just the sadness it would cause my family.

You're right. Get pissed. A pissed that I can never adequately describe. Fight, refuse, survive.
