Just curious who all is into filming their hunts here on the website?.... If so do you self film or run with a cameraman? I do a little of both but mostly self film. It def makes hunting 10x harder doing two full time jobs.
Also what kind of setups are you using?

Canon XHA1, 3rd Arm Pro Extreme arm, Manfrotto Lanc Controller, 701 Manfrotto head

I don't know if you can call it filming but I do have a Roscoby Riser cam on my bow. Eventually I would like to have something like you are using. You can ask good ol' Dale at FAFD. I have been pestering him and picking his brain off and on since last fall. lmao Tough to swallow the price of some of these cameras, but you don't want to spend $300-500 and realize you wasted your money and should have just waited to buy the $1000-1500 unit either. Ugghhh. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Its definatly a blast! Being able to go back and look at your footage over and over is awesome. Your gonna start finding miniDV cams going cheaper and cheaper, due to CompactFlash drive cameras. They make is sooooo much easier for editing and storage of footage. Heck now they have dust proof and infrared prosumer cameras... everyday they are coming out with something new!
moundhill..... a great camera arm for cheap and smaller cameras is the Lone Wolf arm, I used one for year with my GL2.

I have the nicer Muddy arm already and hope to be doing some filming this fall. Just piecing it together still Rutin. My buddy has a pretty nice Sony but I am not sure which model. I re-read and thought maybe I should add this as I am planning on doing some more filming other than the Riser Cam, but I don't know how much as long as we are sharing a camera. I can see me spending the money sooner or later though.

I've got a Sony AX2000 with a manfrotto head mounted on a muddy arm. Still learning, but I expect this year to be big in terms of filming. Ordering a rode Mic next week and a long life battery very soon.

No way I'm filming. My luck I'd have a giant come in and I'd get busted f"n with cam and next thing you know the cam would be in a 1000 pieces. Its not worth it for me...

Filming hunts.. Trail cams..etc.. It's all fun to do.. But.. Do you wanna kill these big bucks or film and take pictures of em? Too risky for me.. I'm sure the big bucks I'm killin every year was at some point on sombodies "hit list".

Keep it simple and you'll kill em every year :)

Fun to do, I am with you. An extra challenge? No doubt about it. If the difference between killing them or not comes down to whether you can film it then I will take footage of the tree while I kill them and mess with the camera later. If I can do both (whenever I get to this point) then I think it would be an awesome way to preserve some of the best memories ever. You can be honest Mountaineer. You don't film because there would be proof you shot some deer running for it's life while you were throwing lead down range hoping to get lucky. We know your "every year big bucks" were results of someone else's deer drives. It is okay. You have got a couple nice ones and that is something to be proud of. I just don't get my rocks off deer hunting with a bullet proof vest under my camo.

Yeah..Its quite a challenge to kill them over a camara...I couldnt imagine trying it...Every encounter i have had with this big ohio bucks has been a very tense and quick situation...They dont live a peaceful existence on the publicland i hunt...It seems they live a life of constant stress...I can honstly say that ive havent seen any normal peaceful behavior with any of the bigger bucks ive encountered...Its always been quick and their behaviors have always portrayed stress.

btw..Your comments were alil unfair..Im not killing these bucks in deer drives.....I sit for long periods of time..dark to dark hunting for days on end..I killed the 2010 buck by tracking him down on some remote ridge in V county. Either way..Im proud of em and btw.. They have been recorded...In my mind. :)

Hicks..trust me..Im trying to kill one with a bow...It aint easy...Hopefully ..this year will be the year...However..I will kill a mature buck this year..that's a promise :)

Do you bow hunt? This past year was my first year bow hunting and I can't express to you how much more of a difference there is when it's natural patterns and instincts instead of them high-tailing it from orange to orange.

No, you don't drive; you've said repeatedly that you let other hunters drive them to you. Not sure there is a difference if you are the stander or the pusher!

However..I will kill a mature buck this year..that's a promise

Yes..I bowhunt..But i live 5 hours from my Ohio spot...Thats a hugh disadvantage...Its very hard for me to come out alone...It takes 3 tanks of gas and hotel ..very exspensive alone..I have to go out with my buddy to cut costs. However...Im going to have to disagree about the natural behavior being more difficult to hunt...Ive learned that there's not a more difficult situation than hunting Publicland during gun season...There's no more difficult situation....Bow season is a much more conducive time to kill mature bucks..Why?...Because a hunter has a chance every day of the season and actually as the season progresses hunting gets better...Bow hunters have the element of surprise every time they enter the woods where as gun hunters do not...Once the element of surprise has been taken away ..killing mature bucks becomes a nightmare and ususally for gun hunters its after the first couple hours of the first day...Thats why most hunters hate gun season..because it becomes nearly impossible to gain an edge on the mature bucks. If i had a choice i would choose Bow season over gun season because it provides many many more opputunities at killing mature bucks compared to gun season...I agree..gun season is a nightmare and if ya wanna kill these big boys consistently you have to put yourself in position according to what season your hunting. :)

Like JD stated, ive let some really nice deer that I would of shot walk bc I couldnt get the footage I wanted.... I enjoy hunting and killing as much as I do the filming/photography side. I let a 130" 8pt walk last year into 10 yards while laying great footage and as I drew he caught my wind and turned and walked with his ass facing me away with no shot. Does it SUCK sometimes.... yes, but does it raise the intensity..... HUGELY!!!! Its insane having a relationship with an animal and capturing his life and death all on film, I film for personal satisfaction and strive for the best. Just my 2 cents

I will give you last year. That was an impressive feat. Congratulations. However, to be fair, up until that point they had been quick encounters of deer being pushed whether by someone you know or not, you have admitted you hunt escape routes. Not taking away from this as it is a strategy which has proven effective for you. I would agree it would be pretty near impossible to catch something like this on film unless there were two guys in the tree. Doubt it could happen self filming.

Sorry for hi-jacking Rutin. I admire your drive and decision to only shoot if they are filmed hunts. This raises your personal bar quite a bit. Certainly would reduce the number of deer you could kill. Whenever I get to filming my hunts, if it is the difference between catching it on film or not catching it on film, then I will be loosing an arrow and filming the tracking job. lol

I guess it all boils down to where one hunts for filming. I know my chances of encountering a mature buck is very slim..and I know when i do encounter one it will be a tense situation. I have to be ready. I cant risk trying to film. It seems these publicland or for that matter any mature bucks are suspicious of everything...From what i have learned, they dont trust the world they live in..every move they make is calculated. When a hunter figures this behavior out, his/her success rate goes way up.

Ill leave the filming to you guys.

Filming is definately the way to go. I am not going to get into the all the other mumbo jumbo, but its def where its at. Bad part about filming is def. the movement. This is why I am being told of getting a good remote control for your camera. keeps your movements way down.

I cant wait to get out in the woods and start hunting and filming, and filming my friends hunts. Its going to be great.
