Love me some baked beans but like applesauce,cottage cheese and a host of other sides I don’t think I’d miss em like bacon.
This whole "nobody will miss them" argument is bogus. A person could say that for just any side dish that exists. Mac and cheese, cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, cucumber salad, corn pudding, corn on the cob, cheesy potatoes, deviled eggs... Etc etc etc... These are all sides that I will absolutely fuckin DEVOUR of given the chance. But if any one of them disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep. It's the shear nature of a side dish, as Jamie said they are subordinate and simply less important than main dishes. You take away smoked chicken, or brisket, or (God help me) fresh backstraps... I'll find it difficult to go on living. But I could give two shits if I never saw cheesy potatoes again. However, I'll eat half the pan of my mom's cheesy taters if given the chance.

lol, well, baked beans are a side dish. side dishes are all fill-in-the-gap foods, playing only a subordinate roll at mealtime. so on that level, I agree 100%. hate on the beans all you want, but the polling results suggest your theory is not holding up, too, Joe. just sayin'.

The poll is incorrectly phrased, the question should not be if people like beans or not, I think we can mostly all agree that they taste good. The statement is that baked beans are a food that people only eat because it's there. If it wasn't most wouldn't even notice much less care.
Your on your own here. It's a staple at our house and so easy to make. Plus leftover sloppy joe meat is great for a sweet chili

Pull mac and cheese or french fries off the menu and I bet people lose their freaking shit. While true that baked beans are a side dish that doesn't hold the status that a main dish its still way down on the list of preferable options. People would be more pissed about mustard than baked beans. KFC got rid of baked beans last year as a side. Fuggin McDonalds caused a bigger social media stir getting rid of that nasty sczechuan sauce.
