and I do love my Tundra.
It was somewhere around 1983or 84. It was fall. I was living in Youngstown going to collage. Average drive time from Ashtabula to y town was 50 min. It was SR 11. Straight farmland most the way. My record was 32 min and I was going to try and break that record that day. I was headed north bound...
The first trooper was headed south. I saw his break lights and bar lights come on but I just dropped the hammer thinking I would just catch the next exit and take the back roads home but at 100mph, the exit came up to quick and was to bendy to slow down so I gave it more pedal.
The second one happened to be rolling down the entrance ramp as I went by. Had he not seen my plate, I would have never been caught but he was to close. I shut her down and prepared myself for some shit...
Back then, they would have you come back and sit in the front seat while they wrote ya up. He just walked up and finger motioned me to come back. I had crossed into another county so the south bound trooper never did show.
We sat in silence for a while.
No priors. Nothing so he was fixing to start the lecture ( I was sure he would be bragging about later that day to his buddies) when I broke the silence by pointing at his dash radar blinking “136” and asked “what’s that”?
It was at that point he kinda blew up and started raising his voice “you know goddam well what that is!!!”
30 min later he was looking under the hood saying he hoped it wasent stock cause his son just got a
Newer one of these. (It was far from stock)
In the end, I said I was late for a wedding I was best man in. ( showed him the tux in the back seat ) and swore I was putting it up for the winter.
He was cool by then. I had played the game and he won. ( one of the very few.) He ended up writing me up for 75mph in a 55 zone under the condition that if he saw that car on his beat (rt 11) before the spring thaw, he would write me up at the 136 even if it was in a parking lot.
True to my word, I put it up for the winter and drove the beater all winter.
