Being an ex-competition and pleasure coon hunter I was knocked back when I read that Fred Moran had his nationally known,(don't know what title Homer had but I think it was Grand Nite CH) Homer dog killed by a car while in a cast on a night hunt at National Rebone Days. To make it worse Dwayne Brough, (of Oak Harbor OH), had his Grand Nite CH Squaw dog also killed in the same hunt. I knew both these hunters personally and Fred Moran started me coon hunting as a teen in Pittsburgh PA area. Acouple of years back Fred also had his Nite Ch Rocket dog shot by a woman who claimed she thought it was a coyote. The dog had an illuminated electric collar on when it was shot,(high tech coyote). I had talked to Fred a couple of months back as I was thinking about starting to run hounds again and he told me he had a law suite for $35K against her. He also said her attorney had tried to settle for $25K and he refused it. Some big money in these hounds to be killed on the road....

Damn. That sucks. The time invested in these dogs alone make em almost priceless. Being a pleasure hunter I always try and cast the dogs in places where I know vehicle traffic is a slim possibility. I'll wait to hunt some more touchy properties until later. But you don't always have that comfort level or control in competition hunts. Ben gets in the timber and get struck. Doesn't shoot out of a woodlot, and I've only seen him cross a road twice. If I catch him shooting a woodlot or crossing a road, him an I are gonna go round and round. Now, I do have one on the box right now that if i caught him on the road, i would give him a cookie.. lmao

Im glad this hunter is going to get a settlement.
A few years ago two people who were peta members used a reciever for tracking coilers to snatch up three hounds during a compitition in northern ky. They killed the dogs which oddly enough belonged to the county sheriff. I one recieved jail time and both were heavily fined.

Actually mike. Their goal is the extinction of all domesticated species.
Their corporate got busted a couple years ago killing dogs and dumping them in dumpsters. They actually kill like 95% of all dogs they get and adopt out the rest.

I don't even want to type in the letters P e t A but they are ridiculous. Glad those killing dogs received the punishment they deserved. Maybe they deserved more, I don't know without details, but at least they were caught and had a penalty for their actions. Probably just a notch in their belt in their eyes. There is a lady that litters one of our local plazas with bowls, houses, etc and we have to come in and remove them as they are attracting nuisance animals to the plaza. Then I end up being the bad guy for keeping the property managers happy. It is stupid. They told me "But those cats are hungry. They will freeze out there. They will starve if we don't feed them and house them." In my mind I am thinking: You feed them and get them up to health and you will have exponentially more cats out there as they continue to breed!
