We got our asses handed to us this morning.. Had two gobbling on the roost. One tom close and a jake further out. The tom pitched and worked away to the jake. Then they started to work back towards us. Instead of using the beautiful short grass logging road they went left of us on the military crest and got behind us.. Then they were down in the field to the east. We snuck down and got set up on an inside corner, but there was a rise in the field about 20 yards in front of us. There were three of the gobbling right over the rise but would never crest it. They eventually worked back into the woods and it sounded like they were back where we originally setup.. So we made a big loop and got back to our original spot. no sooner than we sat down and made a call a tom came running but Alex couldn't see him. He either saw us or didn't see that hen and he worked his way back.. 15 minutes later they were in a different field on the other side.. We snuck down and it looked like two lone toms and a jake. We got a strutter decoy out and they were gobbling but working back towards the woods. We managed to get some looks and Alex gobbled at them and they worked our way some but they really wanted to go back in the woods.. For toms that had no hens and were covering ground gobbling the sure as hell didn't want to play ball very much. That's ok, tomorrow is another day..
