Navajos to buy Remington

I’ve asked this several places with no answers. I know that when native tribes operate casinos and sell alcohol and tobacco products they are exempt from some regulation and taxes. If the Navajos buy Remington will the Pitman-Robertson taxes apply? Will the Navajos have to follow Laws like NFA, GCA 1968 etc? Yes I’ve read they said in the past they’d stop selling “assault weapons” if the bought Remington but who knows how accurate that was.

June 26 (Reuters) - Remington Arms Co, America’s oldest gun maker, is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection that could come as early as Sunday night and is in advanced talks for a sale to the Navajo Nation, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The Native American tribe is planning to vote to approve the deal as soon as Friday, the source said. The tribe previously had bid for Remington, planning to drop its most controversial semi-automatic rifles, the New York Times has reported.

U.S. retailers have placed restrictions on gun sales after school shootings, hurting manufacturers such as Remington. A Remington Bushmaster rifle was used in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Connecticut in 2012 that killed 20 children and six adults, making it central to debates over gun policy.

The gunmaker has filed for bankruptcy before, in March 2018 after sales faltered and the company had trouble meeting requirements of its lenders.

An interesting conundrum. I haven't considered the purchase of a Remington firearm in years. Their quality has slipped so much there are way better options for the money. I like how the article blamed school shootings for the collapse of the company but completely ignored the absolute plethora of new gun companies that have made tens of millions selling ARs and parts. And ignored that the AR market made up a tiny fraction of Remingtons sales. Remington simply priced themselves out of their own market. They reduced quality to the point of basically being Mossburg yet thought they could charge a hundred bucks more for it. Innovation? Forget about it. They'd rather buy a company like bushmaster, throw some Remington green paint and an R sticker on the gun and think their name demands a 10-20% price increase. The completely screwed the Marlin brand after they moved the factory and lost decades of experienced workers and ultimately created a worse product that they wanted more money for. Good riddance.

Interesting.. hopefully they can improve the quality of the recent Remington firearms. It is sad to hear that and iconic brand like Remington is struggling but it is really their own greed that did them in. The first shotgun and rifle I shot were Remingtons. Hell, the first gun I purchased with my own money was a Remington 870.

Didn’t keep up with the times and left in the dust. Good luck too whom ever picks them up. Just seems a little ironic the Navajos are acquiring them...

Remington has been bankrupt or almost bancrupt several times. In the 1880s when the family sold it, again after WW1 when Russia stuck them for a bunch of money. And again recently. The Walker trigger fiasco didn’t help. Remington concentrated on hunting guns but that’s a declining market. They’ve tried to compete in the low end market but in the process quality suffered. For some stupid reason they avoided the handgun market way too long. They‘ve squandered the good names of Remington and Marlin.

Did Greg Ritz ever run them or act as CEO? That dude couldn't ruin a whorehouse outside a military base.

It's hard to compete with smith or Ruger on pretty much every level... quality, price, customer service, warranty...

If remington could concentrate on one thing and do it really well, that would be about the only thing that could salvage what reputation they still have
