Anyone ever kick them up like pheasants? I jumped one like a damn pheasant Friday. Shed hunting a big CRP field I walk right up to him and he flushed from 15'! Talk about a RUSH!!! I was reaching for guns I didn't even have on me.

After my buddy and I stopped laughing, threw out underwear away and gathered our composure. We started walking again and kicked up ANOTHER ONE! The same process happened again. 2 grown ass men almost got GOT!

Both big Tom's, both flushed from feet away. 2 grown men and a dog walking this huge field and they chose to hang tight. Is this normal? I've walked CRP field my entire life and never had this experience. Anyone else? Is this why you guys turkey hunt? Because you had one ruin a perfectly good pair of underwear once? Because I kinda want to shoot one in the face for the first time in my life.

Seriously, I had an out of body experience. TWICE!!!
My grand father always said a whole covey of quail would get your heart pounding. I flushed a woodcock shed hunting a few weeks back, they sound cool when they bail. Flushing them walking in the dark to the stand is a rush. Turkeys, you arent sure of somethings going to try to eat ya they're so loud. Damn birds.

Then you manage to get your soul back in your body and it happens again!

We have seen them duck down when riding a UTV into a field. They will lay almost flat and let you pass by. Learned this by almost stepping on one in tall grass.

I have also gotten into flocks of young ones in late summer. They take off like a flock of pheasants.

You ever walk to a deer stand in the early morning, only to step on a stick you wish wasn’t there and it cracks loud. Then simultaneously the damn flock of birds in the red oak above your head wake up and fly the roost, sounding like an Apache helicopter taking off......all while you try to not turn inside out thinking wtf was that?!? Even though you know exactly what it was, scares the hell out of a guy.

Hahaa nope just my clumsy ass? Cool! Hahaa

I busted a hen off her nest last spring just like that Dave. I swear she came out of a CRP tunel between my feet. Never flushed a tom that way though.

Hmm yes, multiple times. I've flushed/kicked them while grouse/rabbit hunting in SE Ohio but considering the last grouse I saw was 20+ years ago its been a while. I've also kicked them up while busting brush while doing deer drives. Nothing like stepping down a hillside trying to avoid the huge patch of greenbriar and having a flying trashcan blow up into your face. The one timeI swear I had feathers floating around me as I waited for my heart rate to return to below 500.

I've busted bears out from close distance and it didn't bother me like these. Maybe because in besr country you are always on edge. This was just a nice relaxing walk that a couple of Tom's tried to kill me.
