Settled back in the literal saddle on the same piece and tree in public I shot that doe on a week ago. Passed a gut pile 100 yards from the parking lot, not sure if that’s a good sign or not considering I’m 650 yards beyond that. Wind is shifty and potential rain coming, don’t have high hopes. Looking for a mature buck, but if another big doe gives me a “gimme” shot I’ll more than likely take it lol. Good luck to anyone else out.

PS I’m super happy I forgot my thermacell.

Well, I’m not proud but I got it done… Spined this deer tonight at 48 yards… dropped her in her tracks. It was the furthest shot I’ve ever taken on a deer with a compound. I felt absolutely horrible after making the shot that I did. Don’t know if my anchor point was off, maybe she ducked the shot a bit, I’m not sure.. None the less, dead deer. Followed up with the second shot as you can see, it went well. After cleaning her up tonight I found the rage I shot her with completely severed her spinal cord and buried down into her ribs. Anyways I’ll save all the blah blah and say I GOT LUCKY. Will post pictures of broadhead tomorrow. Gotta get showered and ready for some shut eye after I put the kiddos down.

I try to keep em 30 and in but there’s not a single distance a deer can’t jump the string IMO. Congrats on the harvest!

Furthest I’ve shot a deer was 70 yards…deer ran about that same distance after the shot. Then I saw a video by Gene Wensel that showed how much a deer can react to the shot. Then you plug in different variables such as if the deer is alert, if it’s looking at you, distance, etc. and it can really mess up a well placed shot. A few years later I had a huge 8 pointer break out of the woods to a field edge during a slow push. I ranged the buck at 65 yards. With no obstacles, the deer perfectly broadside and knowing the range, I decided to take the shot. Just as I released, the buck took two steps forward…my arrow cutting the air just inches from its ass. It would’ve been a perfect shot…if I was shooting at a McKenzie deer target! From that point on, the furthest shot I’ve taken is 35 yards…and that’s on the extreme end. A crossbow will push the limit to 40, but no further. Too much can happen in the time it takes your arrow to get there. Some may have personal limits a bit farther or a bit closer than mine, but it’s an individual choice.
Congrats on the harvest…good eats there!👍
