I grew up hunting my grandpa’s and his neighbors farms in Vinton county. The last time I hunted there was about 10 years ago. I can promise you, that trend has been going on longer than 2 years. The chaos that was gun season is a thing of the past. People that do still gun hunt often do not take off for opening day anymore. With two Saturdays to fill a tag, I think they save vacation. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it has definitely changed.

I remember sitting in a stand in vinton county in 2007 on opening day and counting 80 some odd shots before 9am.

I believe the deer drives that used to be commonplace during gun season are a thing of the past. They do still happen in some places and are effective but seems as though most people are afraid of running the deer off of their hunting properties. I see both sides of the argument for and against deer drives.

Believe me when I tell you, the 80’s were nuts. Hundreds and hundreds of shots on opening day. A few less each day leading up to Saturday, and then the war again. I always wondered how anything survived. In hindsight I know those countless five shot volleys were not likely well aimed. 😁

There is no comparison to the accuracy of the guns used in the 80s and what are used now. If I would have had this 450 then instead of a Wingmaster 870 with a single bead sight there would be more deer on my wall.
I should say weapons in general. Archery gear has advanced light years from the 80s. So has cold gear.

Hunted an uncles place in Vinton many years back and I was truly afraid of getting shot on opening day. They rang out everywhere and there were no plugs in those guns, heck it may have been just before that law. Funny thing though the deer I saw acted like they had been there, done that and seemed to not care at all LOL!

There is a story of a shotgun that may or may not have been cursed. Forgive me as I don't recall all the details, but it seems like he could have placed it on his foot, squeezed the trigger, and missed. Sorry Dave. I just remember portions of that gun story.
Well I can confirm the gun exists as it took out a Maple tree at my place. Not sure if it's the gun or the trigger puller though that's cursed 😂

Hunted Meigs county back in the mid 80's and it was nuts. The sound of slugs zipping through the trees tops Was kind of scary lol. Awesome deer camps back then also.

seems like lack of deer drives slow the sightings…. The higher winds the last few days around here probably didn’t help much either….
Anecdotally it seems that way. When we only get a couple on Monday we get some almost every day off the farm. Got a bunch Monday and no others until last night my dad and brother got one each at end of shooting light.

Just aren't seeing them.

I still haven't heard a shot. With rain coming for both weekend days, I think I'm going to get some crazy miles on my boots this weekend.
