TOO Garden Thread

First broccoli and maters harvested today. Cucumbers are behind but coming on strong. Peppers are struggling due to weeds, big tomatoes starting to turn. Pumpkins and watermelons are kicking ass. Beans are regular producers every couple of days. We've been keeping up on eating them but kids are tiring on them.

I picked a nice lil mess of maters from my beds yesterday so it’s time to start frying more bacon.

I also transplanted a few sucker plant’s yesterday too.

Adam, you have an outstanding garden. Nicw work. Looks like everyone is having a bountiful garden this year. Mine is throwing vegetable and fruit at me now. Bursting at the seams. Even my cucumbers are doing well this year, lol.

Picked this nice mess today.

I’m not very happy or impressed with the two varieties Brandywine or Hillbilly I tried for the first time this year. Plants are nearly 7 foot tall even after suckering and topping off and narry a tomato on either of em!!!

Rd 2 harvest for the day, sure hope the rain in the forecast for next 2 days happens.

28 pints of salsa last couple of days. Shelves are starting to get full. Have a bunch of tomatoes still green. Probably do some stewed.

After losing my entire peach crop last season, operation F the squirrel’s was successful. Got 3 five gallon buckets worth. I propped up the branches for support but it didn’t do any good…they still broke due to the weight of the peaches. I trimmed back the branches heavily while harvesting. I know it’s better to wait until fall but most were broken anyway. Hopefully the branches get thicker and can support more fruit in the future.

Next year try 2x4’s?

The branches broke past the point of the props…if I didn’t prop them up, they would’ve broke closer to the tree. I drove past a peach orchard this week on the way to an auction and took notice to how they have their trees trimmed, most all only have 3-4 large branches coming off of the trunk. It’ll take a few years of grooming to get it where I want it.

Stopped by the Amish yesterday to grab some apples. Seen a basket of tomatoes that just looked awesome. Grabbed them too. Wife made a cucumber and tomatoes salad that was killer. We took the seeds from one of them to harvest for next year's garden. We had a hard time finding heirloom seeds this year. So now we have them. Best tasting tomato of the year!

Beds are winding down, corns done, zucchini and squash are done, lettuce and carrots done, maters and peppers going strong still…..
We regrouped with the cukes, they are flowering up nicely. We’ll see how that works out.

Here’s my latest haul. Kinda slacked off taking pics of a few harvests but here’s yesterdays haul. Gonna have to adjust soil content to help peppers do better. I can grow the shit out of the plant but a few peppers from each plant all year isn’t cuttin the pepper. Lol

Counted the peaches….total is 370. Cut up most of them today and going to give the harder ones a few days to ripen…hopefully they’ll be ready by Tuesday. Not a bad haul for one tree.

We fertilized heavy last fall and our garden has gone berserk this year. I haven't taken any pictures, but it has been an amazing growing season. We still have quite a lot of stuff we canned last summer, so we are doing some rather not traditional (for us, anyway) food preservation. Last week Nancy made up two gallons of her marinara sauce with fresh tomatoes and herbs. She is back in school now, so the rest on me. Today I made a couple gallons of creamy tomato basil soup with fresh tomatoes and basil. We have given away dozens and dozens of peppers, and probably 20 quarts of green beans. In a day or two I'm going to pickle some peppers and probably make some more marinara. I still have 15 quarts of canned tomatoes from last year, so I won't be doing any of that.

I wound up with 35 cups of soup for the freezer. This is really wonderful with grilled cheese in the middle of winter.
