Was at Johnsons in McCutchenville and an ODNR guy was saying they got a non symptomatic deer with CWD. They will be seeing up a 10 mile radius zone around where the deer was at.

I'm afraid it's a matter of days before Washington County joins the list. My buddy had an encounter last weekend that resulted in the DNR taking the head of a buck he found in a "zombie like" condition on a piece of public down the road from my house. His recount of the story isn't real encouraging.

I want to add that although I consider myself a master baiter, I'm in favor of banning baiting in response to CWD. I only use it because it's a tool at my disposal that increases the odds of success for my wife and kids. But they could outlaw it tomorrow and I'd be just fine with it.
That makes me sad. I hunt areas around there periodically. Guess it was just a matter of time though before it spreads just about everywhere.

Supposedly the deer in question was harvested pretty close to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area. KDP has a huge refuge area with a stupid-high deer population. It's one of the more popular controlled hunt opportunities for women and youths. Larger population = higher risk of disease spread. I have a feeling that refuge is gonna get cleaned out one way or another.

You're right. More realistic that they pay someone a unrealistic amount of money to kill them all. No way all the people paying for conservation would get a crack at the meat.
This has been stuck in my head all day. What if we don't ban it, but regulate it?

Natural food sources like apples and acorns falling isn't the problem. Much like what a combine leaves in the field isn't a problem. Because they're broadcasted or not in a pile. Deer and other animals aren't all touching the same spot over and over.
The problem spots are the places they all touch the same. Like minerals and bait piles.

Guys cwd has been around forever. Baiting might slow the spread but it ain’t the problem. I’d support the ban though 100%

Does and fawns should also socially distance and not rub faces or eat from same locations,briar patches.
Ok a little sarcasm there but I can also see how by not baiting is allowing a potential sick deer to travel further distances throughout the year, expanding home range, to find food - especially in high stress periods. This could also increase group spread.
I highly recommend Mississippi Deer Lab podcats. They cover CWD often - many states in East have had it for 15+ years.

Baiting needs to be banned for more reasons than simply slowing down CWD. That’s a whole other thread (literally).
I really have mixed emotions about CWD. I don’t like the thought of it. But there’s so many examples of governments spending stupid money on trying to erradicate the disease with no progress made whatsoever. There’s no evidence of it spreading to humans. And it only seems to have detrimental effects on deer once they’re past their prime anyway. All that being said, I don’t like the thought of doing “nothing” either. I really don’t know what the solution is, or if we need a solution. It’s a head scratcher for me.

I agree. I’ve listened to 2 or 3 podcast with PHDs discussing it this week and they don’t seem to know which way is up.
As for baiting - cwd or not - I’d support the ban. I believe Ohio‘s potential would shine, even more so. But as you said - another convo for another day brother.
