In my younger days I loved turning a wrench... Since I've aged I have said no more... Last week the exhaust pipe rotted off right behind the Y pipe... Took it to two shops and prices ran between $700 and $800 maybe more... F THAT NOISE... Just got the old shit off and time to make a beer run... Got all the needed parts for $190...

For me, the thing is I have no patience with things mechanical. After I fix the car I'd have to fix the drywall in the garage then take a big magnet into the neighbors yard to find all my...um...lost tools! Then I'd have to go to the eye clinic to get them to remove the rust, then off to the chiropractor for the 20 adjustments.

With the Toyota's, i just drive them and on the very rare occasions they need something, I got a Toyota guy to do the work in his independent garage. It has literally added 10 years to my life, which already is heavily in to borrowed time.

Recently started wrenching again myself. Learning that I haven't got the same drive to do it. Looking at flipping a couple and getting that Tundra bought.
When I was in my early 30's and had to work on something, my wife would literally load the kids up and take them away for the day so they didn't have to watch my kaniptions. I once got so hot that I kicked the vehicle in servise so hard I split my big toe through my work shoe. I refused to go to the clinic for stitches and simply butterflied the toe back together. 2 days later I slunk in and had it x-rayed. The Doc said nothing was broke but I tore the crap out of it and that it was too late to stitch up but was healing well enough. He then asked me what I kicked? I told him my wrenching habit. He laughed and said that is why he drove Toyota's. So I took his Rx to the Toyota dealer and bought a Camry This was back in BG (Before Gummys). It was 1992. I worked a deal on a Highlander and traded my truck a while after that. I have a trailer if I need to haul anything. If I ever make it to a TOO gathering, ask me to show you my formerly matching big toes! Every time I see a new car or truck that trips my trigger, i simply remove my shoe and sock and reminesce...

It's a 2006 Ford 150 with a 5.4 Triton motor... Now that I got my hands dirty, I guess the plugs and coil packs are next on the agenda... Then guess I might as well do the brakes... What's a few more skinned up knuckles....

Dave I know all about the problem with plugs on that year 5.4 Triton... Ford changed them about 30,000 miles ago at the tune of around $900.00... Wasn't attempting it back then... Supposedly they put one piece plugs in... I wouldn't mess with them except I have a miss... I've had the local shop replace one or two coil packs only to have another act up... So I bought 8 coil packs and figured while I'm there might as well change the plugs... If it don't turn with minimal pressure then it's staying... Might keep it till the spring then buy something else.... George what's wrong with DENTURE MAN????

That's the spirit Rich. Get after it. Been driving the 82 CJ5 as my daily all summer. My Toyota needs another section of frame replaced. I haven't had time to do it yet. But. . . It is a 2002. I bought it cheap knowing it needed it. Got two years and the next section of frame is bad. The age old question: pay once and cry once or keep putting time and money into them?

I usually don't mind wrenching. Some of the most frustrating things are the tiniest portions of the job. Like swap a transmission or clutch and the hard part is getting the fittings on the slave cylinder or bleeding the line. You would think dropping the transmission would be the hard part. Nah. It's always the little things. Sort of like getting a bleeder valve out of a brake caliper or lining up a flared fitting in an awkward spot. Those are the things that get frustrating.

Hey Phil, you might want to check with Toyota…they had a recall on Tacoma’s from ‘95 through early 2000’s. I had a ‘96 with over 365,000 miles. I didn’t want to sell as it was my “woods” truck but they offered me $8500. Couldn’t pass that up. They also said I could put junk tires on it and take anything of value from it as they were going to destroy it….they didn’t want it on the road with rust on the frame.

my mechanic was pulling them out of junk yards and dragging them in for the special recall windfall $$$

Never been afraid to tackle something mechanical.... However today's vehicles are built with no room in the engine compartment and you need a computer to work on everything... Hell when I was in my teens you could set points with a match pack... Now I know alot on here don't remember that... Or most say points??? What the hell is that...
