The Flatlands
Just got “up north” with my buddy Levi. We typically go down to SE OH this time of year, but with EHD we didn’t think it would be appropriate to add to the problem. We are in the same area I typically hunt in the lower peninsula. With a pair of buck tags each, and a few doe tags we should have fun. Planning to come up for rifle opener in a couple weeks as well. I’ll keep this updated best I can given the service. Heading out for our first evening sit now.

On the walk in, I bumped a pair of does browsing on acorns, then an additional 3-4 unidentified deer, all within 150 yds of where I wanted to be. I crept another 50 yards to hunt over a scrape that was in the same spot last year. I chose my tree and started my routine. I had my second stick hung when I heard grunting straight upwind of me. I knelt next to the trunk of my tree and reached for my bow and saw him coming. I assume he heard the scraping bark and thought I was a buck making a run? He must’ve seen me nock an arrow, but continued straight at me anyway. I pulled my binos to count points, and he was a solid 115” 9 point with a super dark rack. He stopped at 19 yards and turned broadside. I found a basketball sized hole to shoot through. Drew back, deep breath, anchor and release. I apparently did not see a pinky finger diameter sapling between him and I and my arrow nicked it, deflected and flew God knows where. The buck took off, but stopped at 50 yards. I did a few grunts and he started my way again but decided he better not and wandered off. Never blew and never ran. I think he was just as confused as I was. I quickly got my other sticks hung and settled in. Not exactly the start I wanted, but surely a good sign. Wind is somewhat swirly but it may work, we’ll see. Levi was face to face with a spike on his walk in, and has a couple does browsing within 100 yards of him now. Hoping something can hit the dirt tonight.

Last nights not so great update: Sat with no deer seen nor heard until the last 20 minutes of light. Had a similar sized buck from earlier (could’ve been same buck) come down the trail straight towards my tree. He got to 10 yards and pegged me. I didn’t think the deer would come from downwind of me, but obviously I was wrong. I had to try and pivot to get a shot to my right, and he bounded off. Never blew, but got to about 50 yards and put his head back down and wandered out of sight. With about 10 minutes of legal light to go, I had started to pack up when I heard foot steps behind me. I turn and look and there stands a mature doe at 30 yards looking at my dumb ass fumble fucking with camera gear getting packed up. She went behind a tree so I quickly grabbed my bow and spun around. She was broadside at what I thought was 20, but was actually 22. I got to full draw, anchored, held a little low since she was on edge and let it fly. It sounded like a diaphragm pop, but upon impact she flopped over and started kicking and thrashing around. I thought there’s no way I spined her unless she seriously jumped the string considering I held low with my 20 pin at 22 yards lol. She got up and ran 20 and crashed some more, then got up again and ran a straight line for as far as I could hear then nothing. I quietly packed my gear up, hung a cell cam and met Levi at the truck. It had now been a little over an hour since I shot that we took up the track. My arrow was covered in fat, and had a massive clump of brown hair stuck in the nock, assuming she stuck herself with it after it passed through and fell onto it. Initial blood was a crime scene. Blood sprayed onto the trunks of trees and blood dumping and spraying out of both sides. To me it was the right color, and figured it was going to be less than a 100 yard track job. We followed blood seen in the attached pics for 300 yards then it turned into a sporadic trickle. Once we got to about 430 yards it would be a pile of blood, then a few big drops alternating. Never found a single bed, and lost blood. I have it marked with tape and on OnX, so I will be trying to pick up the track after this mornings hunt. The only thing I can think is she jumped the string way more than anticipated and got shot through the back straps and experienced some spinal shock, but it’s hard to say for sure. Still doesn’t explain all of the blood for several hundred yards. Sorry the pics suck, they are screenshots from videos. Certainly not a good start to our trip and I feel sick over it hoping I can find her with the assistance of sunlight

Morning update: been settled for about 30 minutes. Only bumped 1 deer on the way in. Wind is constant and I like this area, hate my setup. Made it to the public chunk when I realized I left my saddle in a tote at the cabin so I opted to sit on the ground since it’ll be a short sit since I want to look for that doe from last night. Don’t have much of a hide yet, but will work on it once I have a little more light hoping my ruckus in combination with a few grunts can fool a buck into coming in. We’ll see. Levi is back hunting where he was yesterday.

Walked just shy of a mile over the span of 2 hours and did not find a single additional speck of blood or sign of the doe. Every 50 yards or so and glass the bottoms and hillsides. Not really sure what happened. Super bummed out, been a while since I’ve lost one. I ended my morning hunt with a 4 point bumping a doe at 50 yards. Grabbing lunch then getting back after it.
