Mock Scrapes

Mock scrapes are to October, what salt blocks are to summer time. They draw in bucks and make for excellent camera inventory sites. I put this one in just 4 days ago and have already had two good bucks show up for a visit. I usually don't mess with artificial scents. I break a couple branches to hang down and strip the leaves (wearing rubber gloves), dig out a large scrape area, then whip it out and take a big piss right in it.

Anyone else mess with mock scrapes this time of year?

I put them out every year. One trick that I use is to cut a overhanging branch from an existing scrape miles away from where I set up the mock scrape. I place it in a large trash bag then tie wrap it to the overhanging branch at my mock scrape. Be sure to wear rubber gloves. This branch will have natural scents from other deer and the local deer will think there is a trespassing buck around. I’ll use commercial scents for the scrape itself...unless a friend kills a buck and doesn’t want the piss sack, then I’ll use that instead.

Can I ask why folks make mock scrapes instead of just putting a cam over a natural one?
I create mock scrapes to make the local bucks feel as if there is competition for breeding in the area. I try to create the illusion of another buck intruding on another bucks area and that a receptive doe was also in the area....hopefully this will make him spend more time where I am hunting. For me personally, when I use mock scrapes, it doubles and sometimes triples the number of bucks I see compared to when I don’t use them.

The most active scrape on our farm is a mock scrape I started years ago. I wanted a consistent scrape inside the woods, not just along the edges, which are farm has plenty of. The deer took to it like fish to water. Many of my "mock" scrapes and simply me opening up traditional scrapes before the deer do. That ensures they take them over and I'm ahead of the game from a monitoring standpoint.

Got a little time waiting on the wife to finish her therapy on her wrist..so here are some bucks i have hitting my mock scrapes over the years.
I have had them hitting them with velvet still on.
I like to have one within shooting distance of most of my stands, they just cant reaist stopping and working those branches.
