Nearby Bear Hunts?

Anyone have any experience hunting Black Bear nearby? I'm thinking West Virginia or Pennsylvania, but know absolutely nothing about it, or even where to start looking for public land etc. Not looking for anyone's honey hole, but any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

My area in Nc has some Big bear! Would be hard to kill one here without bait. Several good outfitters in Hyde county Nc. I have a couple buddy's that might would take some clients. I only use dogs to hunt them in my area, totally different experience. Good luck

"J" Shhhhhh... We have no bears in this state... Just pollution and concrete... Actually I just got back from putting out a camera... Damn I forgot how far of a walk that is... Bobcat I sent you a PM...

He has TOO come out whole... Although records I believe are based on skull size not weight... Weight wise that is the smaller of the two big ones I have on camera. But he has the biggest head of the two... I'm 2 miles from the truck and no way to get a quad in there for one reason or the other... Its going to be a task. Put it this way: I had a lot of phone numbers in my wallet last year and its beers and dinner for those that help...

We have been using a winch system the last 2 years. It has saved a lot of backs since with got it. It is a slow process, but if you can get the rope to him it'll drag his butt out. It took 4 of us over 4 hours to drag a 595lb bear 200y out of a swamp. After that day we all pitch in got one, money well spent!!

J. I thought about that last year... Joe what exactly do you use.. I was thinking taking a portable generator with an electric winch back in a day or two before the season... Got to be prepared...

This is what we are using. The cone does an awesome job sliding the bear around tree's. We have a backpack to carry winch with.

Joe.... That looks interesting... THANKS...However its just me. My wife would not be happy if I laid out $2000.00 grand for a winch... I was looking at electric ones and I have a real small Honda generator... One had 80 ft of cable.. But how fast will it move 900 lbs.. Whats the rate of retrieval. Hey Brutus may end up anywhere as breeding season is comming up and a male will cover alot of miles. But have to be prepared as it doesnt take long for a bear to go bad when there are warm temps in Oct. Last year I even checked out one of those motorized concrete wheelbarrels...

On average we kill 30+ bear a year between Nc, Va, an Maine. Bear hunting is huge in my area, almost every group has one of these now. The one's that don't, are looking to get one. It has 2 different pulley sizes, one for speed an other for load. We used it last summer to pull around 1000lb of pigs 900yds in some really think stuff.

That isn't what I would call "fun". Skip a road trip or two and pay for one!
