I grew up with a Winchester Model 70 / Leopold VariX2. Carried that since I was 16 in NY, through the Adirondacks, in several hunting seasons. Still have that gun / scope combo. Can't afford it now (Modern Win Model 70 is easily $1600+, and Ohio doesn't like fine upstanding loads like the venerable 30 caliber / 7.62.
I recently purchased a Remington 783 chambered in .450BM, and put a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50 scope on it. Seems to shoot well, out to 200 yards, as long as one uses the BDC reticle correctly, and lets the shot come as a surprise. It's heavier than the Mo 70 carbine, but I only carry it one week a year, and unlike my hunting in NY, which involves mostly drives, Ohio hunting involves mostly sits in a tree, and waiting.
