Sgt Fury’s 2023 season

cleared out some trees today so that I can bring a trailer onto the property and turn around without having to back it in off of a busy road.…now I’ve got a U shaped driveway at the property. Yesterday I had a couple of friends help me get my Banks blind set up. It’s in a spot that I can shoot turkeys/deer at the field and also cover the swamp. Leveled it today and anchored it to the ground.

Used a chain saw and cleared a spot that once was open but had overgrown. I reclaimed it and still need to get in there with a mower then put in a food plot.

Mowed/leaf blew the plot area…still have to run a harrow over the area and put down some lime…then throw out some clover seed. Turkeys already found it.

Todays view…first time sitting in the new blind. Had turkeys several hundred yards away in all directions gobbling at first light. Been quiet shortly after fly down. Nothing seen yet. I’m in a good spot so eventually I should get an opportunity.

Same result as yesterday…..went silent after fly down. Haven’t even laid eyes on a hen.

Made some adjustments to the new blind…added a shelf for my calls. Heater allows me to dress light on cold mornings…which is nice. Also brought along a thermos full of coffee.

Today there were zero gobbles in the early morning….but I did see my first Turkey after two days of seeing nothing. This is a bearded hen that I’ve gotten pics of from a couple of trail cams. She’s got the biggest beard I’ve ever seen on a hen. She said she wants to be put on a can of bud light. She never came closer than 100 yards but did stop and look every time I made a few yelps.

Day four in the blind. Heard a single gobble far off in the distance. Heavy rain on and off. We’ll see what happens.

Turkeys seem to be moving today….saw two jakes (they showed zero interest in the decoys…walked right by them) and one hen in the middle of the field.

Got the fan out today. This is the last day of “A” permit. Monday starts “B” week. I only applied for the for two weeks.

Your deluxe blind will help you stay out there longer.
This year, I finally figured out what it is about turkey hunting that I don't like and it's the "bump-on-a-log" type sitting....for hours. I was in a low profile turkey chair this year, hiding near some brush. The loss of freedom of movement, is worse than any other type of hunting...for me.

Good luck out there Nick. I do believe you’ve got the better scenery. Supposed to rain here for the next 3 days and we are looking at 1-2” for our area. At least the temps are cooler.

I opted out at 5 this morning. Sprinkled hard and wind was blowing. Need a day off but now the regret is haunting me of what I might’ve missed not going. That’s why I’m a morning person. Looking like a couple more days of hunting here for me, unfortunately the green army box callers will be out in force running and gunning on 200 acres of ridges. Might have to squirrel hunt a bird and roll out

Just watched a red fox chasing two jakes around in circles at the other end of the field. I was using binoculars and it was way too far for video. One of the jakes flew off and the other one is making his way toward me. I won’t shoot him but maybe he’ll give me some good video interaction with my decoys. This season has been super slow with Turkey sightings….haven’t laid eyes on a mature Tom yet.

Was deer hunting while I lived in Ohio, daybreak the turkeys started flying down, a red fox showed up and chased them around like a horny drunk at closing time…. Was hilarious too watch….
