waxing moon

I haven't looked through the archives to see if this has been discussed in detail at all and even if it has, fugg it, its February! What else do we have to do till walleye start running and the tom's start strutting. I was sitting on toilet today and flipping through an old outdoor life magazine, I came across a small article about waxing moons. Basically a biologist working for a field camera company, did a study over course of time and found that mature bucks more 4 times more likely to move during the day during waxing moons (especially nocturnal bucks). Anyone a die hard or hunt based off of moon phases or hunt the waxing moon pattern? I read so many different articles about moon phases that I haven't ever really paid attention to moon phases. I have always been a cold front, hunt before bad weather/storms and mornings after fog and no moon nights. I have already looked at the calendar and the last week of September 2020 is waxing.

I should’ve made a log this year. I had planned to hunt the moon. Maybe next year I’ll do one. I think there’s something to it, I just don’t know what.

I do consider moon phases when I decide to head out.

My annual hunting & fishing calendar that's hung on my hunting closet door.

It's been discussed to some degree in that thread. I'm not much help since I hunt when I can hunt, regardless of moon phase.
I hunt and fish when I can as well, I started browsing through the sticky note thread that Redhunter scolded me about not seeing ;) and noticed that dandy buck you got day time pics of back in 2016 that was after a super moon. I have always had the belief to hunt after full moons because of the dark nights more likely to move during the day etc. This waxing moon phase theory contradicts the hunt after the full moon theory, but I didnt even know what a waxing moon was until about an hour ago.

Wildlife,

Where could I get his calendar? That looks awesome, I think I may try to document the moon phases in my hunting log this year and see if I can find a correlation.

Honest question Denny. You say you "consider" moon phase when you "decide" to hunt. I think it's safe to say you hunted far more than just about every member here. With that large a sample size, I'd assume you'd see some direct correlation between phases and movement. Again, assuming that correlation, I would expect you to avoid low percentage days, yet you seem to hunt whenever your free. So I'm curious as to the consideration you take in moon phase and how that impacts not when you hunt, but where and perhaps how.

Yes, I consider to be blessed that I live and work from home mainly these days, which allows me to hit the woods more often than most.

When I was your age, I didn't have that luxury. I was extremely busy in my profession and raising my boys. In fact, I missed out on several seasons because of my career and then when I decided to work within the state, I hunted mainly on the weekends, or when I could get home early, or took days off.

I have every intention of putting together my final report of my recent deer season that should clearly show patterns of the deer herd within the areas that I've hunted.

Lately, I've been busy with work and trying to get out by the end of the day for some coyote hunting, so I haven't had much time to work on that report, but I assure you that I'll get it done soon and share it with everybody.

With regards to the moon phases, I would say that the major prime times predicted on both the calendar that I use along with other considerations such as weather conditions/fronts, barometric pressures and so on, have proved that I have encountered more wildlife during those times than any other times I've hunted where I just felt the need and desire to be outdoors.

I like to hunt & fish both morning & evenings, however when I'm targeting a mature buck specifically, I'll refer to the 'Prime Time' calendar to help me determine when I should be chasing.

Usually when I'm out, I'll always keep in the back of mind of what I've read just previously from the resources that I use, which I'll try to stay very alert during those predicted times. It is of my experience that it does seem to be accurate or very close.

When I finish my final report, I'll compare it with the 'Prime Time' calendar that I use and see if there is an actual direct correlation. I suspect that there will be.

I hope that I answered your question alright for you and if not, perhaps when I get my report out, it will help clarify.

Thanks for asking!

You guys kill me. I've always been an outdoor kind of guy than anything else. I prefer it that way. Life is much simpler for me when I'm out there.

I can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing other than spending more time with my boys and that is something that's coming for many of you when your own grow up and leave the house.

Until then, you can still keep cracking on me...

I think most are in awe and appreciate the amount of time you put in not only hunting, but chronicling those hunts for us. Keep at Denny, I dont think anyone's necessarily making fun of you buddy👍

Trust me, I don't mind it in the least bit. I believe there stands a pretty good chance that someone out there just might benefit from my shared experiences afield, whether it's good, bad or indifferent. It's one of the reasons why I joined this forum. I don't claim to know everything nor do I believe I can't learn something new.

I'll always appreciate constructive criticism and good feedback, especially from those that I respect.

I enjoy taking part in this open forum and the camaraderie when I'm among fellow 'TOO' members.

There's a bunch of good people here that I'd like to think are my kind of people!

So please, don't think that I'm offended because I'm not.

Life is 'TOO' short to get all bent out of shape over this thing we call, 'huntin'.

I appreciate your sharing, thanks!

Yep, not making fun, just asking how you take it into consideration given how often you hunt. It's clearly not a deciding factor on IF you hunt, so I'm curious how you deploy that info and if it's dictating where and how you hunt instead. I'd hunt that much if I could, so I'm certainly not poking fun at it.

By no means did I think you were poking fun. I truly believe that you're seriously interested in why I do what I do. That's why I'll followup with my season analysis, which will include the the Prime Time' comparison to my report. I'm just as curious about it myself.

I'll also give my opinions and/or reviews on the new equipment & gear that I used this season, which I hope will be beneficial information for someone.

Just so you know, one of my passions in life is to see to it that young people take up this sport and continue the responsibility of wildlife conservation.
