White Bass runs

My boys are old enough now that I want to get them on these runs. They are a blast to catch! I’m located in SW Ohio but I’ll travel a little ways for a couple of good hours of fishing with my boys. (Or any of you guys)

I’m thinking about hitting Cowan tomorrow or Friday. Anyone know if they’re running yet? @brock ratcliff

For anyone that doesn’t fish these runs, you ar missing out on a ton of fun. Throw anything white in the water and if they are around, they will explode on it! I prefer just a white rooster tail. Throw it until they have it so smashed up it won’t spin anymore. Mated with my Shimano fast action ultralight...yeah buddy! Screw turkey hunting, this is REEL fun!!!

You don’t need to travel far. Rattlesnake and Paint creeks are both full of them right now, or we’re a week ago. I haven’t been after them but some of the local guys I know have been. You are right, few things are more enjoyable.
Btw, if you go to the 138 bridge, walk east a quarter mile, you’ll find a pool below the first big sandbar that usually holds a lot of fish. At times the hole right under the bridge has a lot of them in it as well. Hope you and the kids nail them.

You can also access that big pool, actually a series of them from winegar road off 753. That is where Masons big deer were found dead too. Always crappie and white bass up through there this time of year.

Do you eat white bass? When growing up on Erie we always threw them back. Not enough meat and too fishy is what My Dad taught. We ate perch, walleye, and bluegill. Everything else was a throw back. I still have a couple of those white bass casting leaders with the heavy bobber. I recall having a couple days catching them on every cast.

I think they taste great. Key is, throw them on ice ASAP or clean them basically while alive still.

See ya next weekend for the "Big Show"!
Yup, my boys are pumped! They really wanted the double weekend. I’ll keep them close to home and play between storm fronts. They should be ready to show those boys of the north whats up. This will also warm them up for the season. See if we can’t talk mom into that boat for the barn😂.

They're palatable if treated properly like Dave said. They definitely aren't walleye or perch though, that's for sure.

When you get into them good. You can tie on double jigs and pull doubles almost every cast. You’ll lose some hogs though. If they run in opposite directions, it’ll break the line between the jigs. Hours of fun!

Most of us have been spoiled by walleye and perch. Like Dave said, keep them fresh. When I fillet them, I'm careful to not go against the skin. I'll stay off a hair and eliminate any of that red meat. Trim off the rib area. Then just keep them in cold water and rinse off. The average person who doesnt eat alot of fresh walleye or perch love it.

If you're into smoking fish, there is no better fish that swims in ohio waters to smoke up. Scale, gut, trim all the fins and head. Simple brine and smoke whole

Let us know! Good luck
Not much happening the dozen people that were there weren't catching much water is low low. I barely got my boots wet going to the island. I only landed one bass. Looked like one group was doing good. Talked to clearance for good while. Hun to wet a line none the less.
