Going to be picking up a new dog tomorrow. It's my brother in laws 3 year old yellow lab. They have four dogs and I think want to have kids soon so they are trying to thin down the dog herd. We are trying her out for a week to see how it goes but if it's between the wife and the dog I'm keeping the dog. I've never trained a dog to hunt but I'm looking forward to it. She will be mostly used on waterfowl hunts but I want to take her pheasant hunting a couple times to see how she does.

You realize that training a 3 year old dog is gonna take a lot work. On the both of you... It will be a long road as she already has habits.

You seem like a very dedicated guy, so I hope you share your adventure with us.

She's gonna need a lot of attention also as she is used to running with a pack.

The two dogs my sister in law added was pretty recent so I'm hoping she isn't too used to that. And yah I'm sure it will take some work but I'm up for it. And since my in laws work a lot she is in a kennel most of the day so with my wife and kids home she will get lots of attention that way. She is already obedience trained so that will help. I'm happy for you man. Reading my first reply, it didn't read like that. Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude, it was just my first thoughts. I have faith that you'll be a great couple in the field.

There is no rudeness in truth. I know it will be tough but rewarding. That 1st early goose hunt in September is going to be interesting lol.

She'll be fine dude. Labs are smart animals... 3 years old or a puppy, you can train em. Just takes patience and consistency. Keep us posted! You're going to love having a hunting dog. It's a game changer.

Biggest thing you're going to want to focus on is obedience. A disobedient dog is a worthless dog in the duck blind. They'll all go out and pick up ducks, to different degrees, but they'll all do it. It's the ones that listen and obey that are the most enjoyable to hunt over.

This is he best advice you could get.... Spend lots of hard time getting the basic commands down pat....

Yah my plan is to let her get settled tomorrow and start training Sunday. My biggest goal tomorrow is to make sure she doesn't eat my cat.

Don't let her train with Hank then. He is part of K.A.T. "Kitty assassination team"
