Not my thing. I killed a jake last year. Probably go out again this year if my schedule permits. I don't contribute much to turkey talk as I am still learning a lot from reading here. If I never killed another turkey, it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. Glad you get pumped up about it. I know guys ate up with it like I am with deer. I am just not one of them.

I haven't had much time to look, I usually try and hunt the same places each and their pretty good about returning. The snow down here is damn near gone, and I hope its another 8 months before I see it again.. Ryan should be around soon to get his annual contest sign-up going and that is when this section really starts to pick up. By the way, you'll want to work on getting your posts count up to 50 so your eligible for the contest.

Someone say turkey contest???

I'll get it started tonight.

I will never walk into a woods without knowing where a bird is roosted come season, unless JD is driving us to a blindfolded location. I was out shed hunting yesterday and found feathers and tracks in a patch of woods I started hunting last year. Looking good. Down the road I've counted as many as 30 some and 6 long beards in a group. Must have had a good hatch 2 years ago because most looked like 2 year olds. Then yesterday 2 lone toms hauled ass across the road so they might have broke up moving to spring spots already?

Turkey hunting for me is an excuse to look for sheds, mushrooms, napping in the woods and maybe even shoot a big, dumb, ugly bird in the face. If they tasted better, I'd probably hunt them harder. So for me, scouting is pointless because I could care less if I shoot one. Just being out there to see the woods come alive on a crisp spring morning, and to hear some gobbles, that's enough for me.

I cant wait for opening day to get here. Im not planning on scouting until about 2 weeks out. Just need to hunt something, I have been bored since deer and goose went out. Just bought a few new diaphragm calls and looking into getting a choke for my nova i bought last fall. Have seen a few groups of turkeys in a couple fields by the road feeding.

Turkey hunting to me is just better than no hunting. But I've really enjoyed taking the 2 grandsons in the past and have them take nice Toms on my farm. But they are old enough to hunt by themselves now. There's still hope for my 14 yr. granddaughter but she keeps telling me 'I'm not the woodsy type'.
I need to redeem myself after taking my Tom for the TOO Turkey Contest last year.
But turkey hunting is right in the middle of my food plot prep work timetable. Plus I devote more time now to my R&D work.

I love hunting turkeys in the spring but never chase fall birds. Lucked into the 2 I've killed while rabbit hunting. They were targets of opportunity.

Spring turkey hunting is exciting as hell and on top of it, it gives you a chance to scout for deer, look for sheds, dig some ramps, etc. In the spring, there's nothing better than seeing a big, fat strutter coming into range gobbling his head off and in the fall, a mature buck working his way towards you!

I took the scenic route home last night and probably saw 3 dozen birds out in the bare spots in the fields. I probably saw 40 deer as well in the same spots. No antlers were visible but there were some beards dragging in the snow!

Tarcher.....Noticed your Akron location do you hunt around the area? If so which side of Akron are you located on?
