My theory on this is everybody and their brother are running cameras and cornpiles.There is way more activity in the woods because of guys checking cards and carrying corn in the woods.this has pushed the bucks to be nocturnal.sure you will see them in the rut but other than that they have gotten educated from all the traffic and are moving at night

And some wonder how the ODNR managed to sucker hunters across ohio into decimating the deer population. Lol.

The writing is on the wall. Some just won't take the time to read it.

I remember a time in January about 8-10 years ago that I was hunting a Carroll County farm. The ground had been covered in snow for a while. The spot I hunted that particular evening could only be hunted by actually laying prone on the ground. The snow was so covered in deer crap and urine that the woods actually stunk. Finding a place to lay on the snow wasn't easy or pleasant. Today, my dad still hunts this farm and rarely sees a deer. Times have changed and I only see things getting worse year after year unless something gives soon.

I'm all for outlawing the use of bait, antler restrictions, shortened seasons and a one deer limit. I realize I'm in the minority on these issues, but honestly believe they are needed to some degree.

Between gun, 2-day, and muzzle loader seasons I was on 17 stands either morning or evening. I saw a total of 12 deer on those 17 stands. Very, very few shots heard compared to days of hunting 8 to 10 years ago.

The two farms above our property were or are shooting deer with crop damage permits, coyotes, and four Amish stands on my fence lines are to blame.

I don't even see deer any more if I take a tractor ride to see whats going on. The ground hogs are also near extinct.

Somethings got to change. My insurance went up 10% this year even though there are few deer left to be hit by cars.

You aren't as small a minority as you think.

I am not sure about antler restrictions though. What if there is a year and half old buck with 8pts? He could be shot? What if there is a 6yr old buck who doesn't meet guidelines to be shot as per antler restrictions? He lives to pass on his genes? I guess I have mixed feelings on the antler restrictions unless someone can spell out something which makes better sense than the ones I have read in the past.

Outlaw baits? WOuldn't affect me. SHorten season? Won't affect me. One deer? Ouch. That one might hurt when it comes to feeding the family, but if I needed to make this sacrifice I would be all about it. You aren't as alone as you think Dick.

I am only buying one tag next yr myself,stop baiting during season? wont bother me either but then i guess no foodplots either,bout the same as baiting. What about minerals also? i mean where do you draw the line on baiting?antler restrictions? i am not sure about that one.dont think we need it here.
I guess minerals and baiting for guys during the summer for pictures like some states would be ok but not during season.
Guarantee you alot of big bucks and deer in general would survive.
I bet the feed mills would not like the loss in revenue on that one.lol
You are not alone Dick but it is at the point now most guys that i know that bait do it to keep up with all the neighboring hunters doing it.
As Charles Alsheimer said in one of his books...He with the largest bait pile wins. Sad but true.

I'm good with the one deer limit, per property. Every property is different and every property has different carrying capacities. Good luck hunting on your prime land that the land owner wants more deer taken though, because you just added more hunters to that property.

Education is key here. Not laws, the general deer hunting public needs to know more about what try are doing. Cause and effect sort of thing. Communication with you fellow neighbors doesn't hurt either! This secrecy "my buck" bullshit is killing my favorite pass time.

Easy buddy, we all started somewhere. Not everyone can start out knowing everything. Wasn't long ago I was a "brown is down" guy. Like most people, I didn't live on the property I hunted (3.5 hour drive) so when I seen a deer, I tried to kill it. That's how I was raised, meat hunter. I still meat hunt, I'm just more selective on the properties I do it on. I kill 3+ deer every year, zero of it goes to waste.

I'm also more selective about what deer I kill. I leave the breeder doe alone.

Its obvious in all forums that deer numbers are down.lots of guys complainv about deer sights.i just don't see why anyone would want to take it upon themselves to shoot more than 1 deer a year so the numbers can rebound.there is only one reason why guys wont

That's a good read and exactly what's going on. But to expect or think the common Joe Blow hunter is going to turn it around by not shooting deer is just fairy tale thinking. Sure there are some that do it on their own but in my thoughts it's a very small %. Common hunting guys talk big when in a group but don't follow through when on their own.
The TOO crowd is a cut above the rest and we to care but how many TOO forum members are there 3000 or so out of the 300-400,000 deer hunters in Ohio? So that leaves a lot of hunters shooting all the deer you save by not shooting. Wishing it wasn't true.
