Another tractor thread

A guy at work mentioned that he had a little tractor he wouldn’t mind moving out of his barn. I don’t need one by any means but it does cost me around $1,000 a year to maintain my driveway. So...with that thought. $2,000 for this little guy would pay for itself in 2 years. I don’t exactly have a place to store it though. Shop was on the list for later this year.

Anyways, I’ve been on the fence for about a week now on this. Still not sure about my need vs want. 2wd is limiting, 12 hp doesn’t really leave me with much of a bush hog. But the plow, driveway drag and lawn sweeper would get some use. 2 owners, 1200 hours, woods finish belly mower.

Whatcha think?

Seems a little steep to me. Leaf collector can be found cheap. They aren't used a ton anymore. I've seen some under $100. They do fill up fast. Not sure what to make of the driveway grader. It could be awesome. I can't tell. Belly mower would be tough to sell separate unless you needed a mower. Might fetch $200-500. Tractor could probably be found for $800-1200.

I think I'd look for a Ford 8n,9n, or similar. Then you'd have more options for bush hog, grader blades, box blades. . .you know, other stuff that cost you more money. Lol

How big of a driveway do you have? Do you have any use for the mower?

As you know I have a B7100 for camp which is a good bit bigger than this one. It will work for what I want, but there is a big difference than compared to a bigger tractor when it comes to doing work with it. I needed the smaller tractor to haul back and forth.

Also I have weight in/onthe tires on my B7100 and I can tell you that in 2WD it would be pretty limited. 4wd makes a big difference in those small tractors. The turf tires are pretty limiting too if wanting to do more tractor work.

Like Hicks, I am not sure what to think of the grader without seeing it in action. It seems that it would just push the stone out to the side? For driveway maintenance a box blade works really well in my opinion.

The tractor does look well taken care of for a 40 year old tractor and looks like it may have been restored? Don't know but the paint and stickers look too good for that age of tractor. LIke Hick's said I think it is a little steep for being 2wd.

It’s original condition. This guy bought it off his grandpa. Always been stored inside and didn’t have the belly mower added till recently. His grandpa had a tow behind offset mower and used it to mow the ditch. The condition is what really has my attention...and only 1200 hours.

Driveway is a 1/4 mile. I built a drag for my quad that worked just fine. I’m sure this would work as well. Just can’t let it get real bad, gotta run the driveway every couple of months.

I realize this is basically a lawn mower with a 3 point. Kinda just want to mow a path in my woods and keep up in the driveway. I don’t have a need for anything big. If this was a 4x4, it would’ve been a done deal already. Just to say I had one

I’ll add that if I was going to spend the money for something bigger, I’d likely buy a hoe or skid steer.

If you are buying a hoe, I would recommend one of the hoe's on the fishing thread. They would be worth the money but I would just rent as purchase would be really expensive.

Being original that tractor is in great shape. One thing is you could always buy it and if you didn't like it, you surely would be able to get most of your money back out of it.

Do you still have the quad and driveway grader? If so it would be cheaper to buy a pull behind field mower to cut paths in the woods. Not my money though. I'd just hate to see you drop $2000 on something worth $1200-1500. I think that may be high even. Especially if it needs tires or has an unexpected repair in the first year.

One other thing. If you consider buying it, shake the back tires. That has the old style hubs on it and they are notorious for getting loose and hard to keep tight. Will cost about $300 for a pair of new style hubs that fixes the problem.

If you don’t need to haul the tractor around I kinda agree with hicks. I used to have a mf135 with a loader. Basically the same as a ford 8n but more horsepower. It had a loader. You can get them for 3k or a little more. With a tractor like that you can start to do some serious work.

Or a Ferguson, TO, or several others. Cheap and easy to work on. Readily available parts. Simplistic machines.

This is one of those slippery slopes. If I'm going to spend $2k I may as well spend $4k on something which will serve me better. If I'm spending $4k maybe I should just jump up to a newer machine. . . .

Give us a little more time and we will have you talked into a 100 HP with a 15' batwing mower for those trails of yours.

Tractor sizing is really tough to do unless you know a person's exact situation.

Sorry, Dave but I'm with the others. That just looks like a big lawn mower to me. 2k for a lawn tractor, that age, with only 2 wheel drive, and some beat up implements? Maybe it is worth that much. But it wouldn't be worth that much to me that's for sure.
