Crossbow Broadheads

Looking for recommendations on broadheads for my daughter Jenna to use in a crossbow. She is looking at some of the new mid priced Tenpoint crossbows and was asking me for advice. With the faster crossbows are you limiting yourself to a mechanical these days or would some of the bigger fixed blades work? I was thinking more in the lines of a Slick Trick Magnum or something similar but you guys have the knowledge I need. She is not opposed to a mechanical at all, just want something sturdy and will fly well.

I’m using rage in my ten point. They are very accurate and the deer seldom go more than 100 yards…most times half that, however, the blood trails I’ve been getting suck. Last buck was double lung and took off the top of the heart and although there was a blood trail, it should’ve been much easier to follow. I had a thread I posed the same question…I’ll see if I can find it and I’ll tag you if I do.

Thanks for reminding me of that thread. I remember looking at it before but never really got a good feeling for what other crossbow users were using or if it even mattered. Was hoping to get an idea if there are some new heads people tried with their crossbows this past year or preparing to use this year.

What grain head are you all using?? I’ve seen up to 150 grain heads online and got to thinking about all the heavy arrow and weight forward stuff. Our old crossbow we just used whatever spare heads we had, usually 100 gr.

My research on this subject has been like trying to find Bigfoot. Some are saying that the technology in the arrow itself hasn't reached the speed crossbows are shooting.

I was going to try and build a heavy set up and it just isn't working out. I would suggest using whatever they suggest for arrow weight and broadhead weight. Spine and all of that. Beyond that, the faith in the equipment would have to take over. Whatever you tip it with will kill a deer. This ain't the old days of things not operating. I would ask her if she would like a one time use kind of thing, or something she can resharpen to be used again. Let her make the choice and believe in it. They all kill.

We used the Rage chisel tip xbow blades last year. This was the result at 25 yards

I completely changed my crossbow setup this year as I finally ran out of aluminum arrows and made the switch to carbon. I’m shooting Tenpoint Pro Elite 400s with 125 grain Magnus Stingers. They group with my field points and hit like a ton of bricks. Main reason for the switch was just to streamline my equipment a bit between my crossbow and compound. I shot Muzzy Trocars in the past and they were ok, not great. I’ll have to report back on the “live” performance but so far, me likey

Good stuff guys! This is what I was looking for to have her look at and we can have a conversation about. I’m glad to hear @Isaacorps @Dannmann801 and others are getting good flight out of fixed blades. I was thinking these faster crossbows it wouldn’t be possible. The Rage you cannot deny the carnage they can have on a deer.

This is the crossbow she bought tonight.

Something I found when looking at the recommendations from Tenpoint on Jenna's new crossbow.

With my Excalibur I shoot the Excalibur brand 150 grain head. They fly perfect but the blood trail is very weak to none. My buddy shoots the same with the same results. I've lost one deer with them. I have tried the Rage 100, thunder heads in 100 and 125, and some muzzys. With my crossbow I'm going to need to order special bolts with a heavy brass insert to give me up front weight if I'm going to try anything lighter than the 150's.

G5 Montec 100 Grain here. Only ones I have ever used, never tried anything else. I have been pleased with results so I have never looked elsewhere. I am sure there is something better and something worse.
