Mid week rd.2 seedlings will be bumped up to 4" containers, along with rd.1 bell peppers.

Really hoping April weather plays nice for us all to get into the dirt.

Got 6 pressure treated 2x10x8’ boards to make a couple raised beds. Just gotta figure out where the best place out front of the house to put them. Next step is to get a trailer box load of top soil and frame these beds up and fill them.
Slow down Ric. You're going to spend your entire retirement /pension in the first several months buying lumber like that. 🤣🤣🤣

Enjoy your gardening this year!

But more importantly, I got the big DR tiller up and running and some dirt turned over today for the early starts! I've been staring at that damn tiller in pieces in the garage since last May. They sent a brand new chassis late summer and I swapped everything over this past week. Only 1 left ovwr bolt too! Now if she'll just last 10yrs like a Ford & Chevy should.

On a side note it never ceases to amaze me how well things grow down here. From weeds to all kinds of plants. I planted those beans from seed 9 days ago. I planted some cucumbers from see Saturday evening and they're sprouting above ground this morning. 😳

Wanted another 4x8 bed so I moved them around to fit in the third. They’re all level or very close to being level and I used leftover bricks from our house build to fill in the biggest gaps on the ground due to the slope away from the house. Going to fill the rest along the inside of walls with a little gravel to prevent soil erosion under the walls. Going to Evans tomorrow to get 3 yards of super topsoil and fill them up. Gonna plant tomatoes, peppers and marigolds to help fight off the insects.

Looking good Ric'r!

10wks on rd 1 plants tomorrow, all got staked and pruned while I had them out of the sled to clean out the sled bottom. Even with a fan blowing on them and the dehumidifier about 10' away, that water was getting nasty in the bottom and some slight mold growth on the bottom sides of the bag. Rinsed them off in the garage and sprayed with 3% perox. Cherry tomatoes are developing nicely, 1 of the indt. regular size is starting fruit, peppers are rolling, and brocolli starts its hardening on Monday....come on mother nature!

I hooked up my box trailer and headed to Evans yesterday and brought home over 3.50 yards of super soil at $44/yard. I mounded it up in the middle with 2 bags of Miracle Grow raised bed soil per each bed.
Today I ran to nursery and got 6 varieties of peppers and some marigolds to plant along the edges to help fight of critters and bugs. I’ll pick up my tomato plants from a neighbor down the road who sells plant at $2 a plant. I won’t plant anything in the beds till the weather begins to start warming up more and there’s less chance of freezing temps.
Tomorrow I’ll drive some rebar into the ground at all corners of each bed to prevent them from shifting or moving.

I put ground rods (but rebar would work) in the beds and put ground clamps every 12-18” up the ground rods….as the tomato plants grow, I’ll tie them to the ground rod. The ground clamps ensure that the weight of the tomato plant doesn’t cause it to slip down the ground rod into a heap. Typically you can get the plants to grow 6-7’. I’ll also use thick string or twine to help support the heavy branches as they grow away from the main stalk.
