Wife and I had our 23rd anniversary back at the beginning of June. We decided to take a trip to Glacier National Park. We only got into the park for one day do to needing a vehicle pass that you needed to purchase a day in advance. Really wouldn't have made much difference as most of the Park was only accessible to hiking or biking do to a 40' deep drift the park service was working on to remove from the roadway. Going to the sun road was closed at Avalanche trail so we made the hike to the lake. I forgot I'm old, out of shape, and have flatland smoker lungs lol. Made the 2 mile hike and seen sights that will be in my heart and memories forever.
We spent most of our week driving and sight seeing. Went on a suspension bridge over the Kootenai River. After that we Drove over into Idaho just so the wife could knock another state off her list. Drove up the backside of the park and almost to the Canadian border. Hit a few mountain lakes, a few local eateries, and seen some pretty cool wildlife along the way. Spent a day and Drove all the way down to Darby/Hamilton area where I was 27 years ago for guide school and showed the wife some of my hangouts. Lake Como has changed so much I didn't recognize most of the surrounding area. We use to see elk almost every trip up but the wife and I seen absolutely none the entire trip. We did manage to see whitetail, mule deer, black bear with cubs, and a moose.
We will be going back at some point and try a different time of year so we can actually see the entire Park. I'll post some of my pics to share the beauty of this great country and as a reminder to slow down and enjoy life.

It was definitely a great trip. That rental car got a workout for sure lol. Kootenai forest, flathead forest and miles of bison ranches, flathead lake, Bitterroot mountains, the selway, lake Como, McGregor lake, lake McDonald, avalanche lake, and a few other little lakes. Drove the north fork road almost to Canada. Rental company charged me $138 to detail the car when I returned it. The amount of dust from driving dirt/stone back mountain roads was incredible 🤣. Well worth the charge if you ask me. That shit gets into every little nook you can think of 🤣

awesome! thanks for sharing pictures, this is a bucket list item for us, going for sure in the next few year.
I would suggest a fall trip. Spring weather is very unpredictable and depending on the past winter the snow on the mountain roads will keep them closed until late June. When we went down to Hamilton and got to the observation point I wanted to get to it was raining and low 50's high 40's at the top of the mountain. Snowed there a couple days after we left.

Yeah, I miss Montana for sure. I want the wife to love it too, and she does, and I'm still working on her to consider finding a place out there, but we'll see what happens in about five years. If I had my way completely, we'd be living there right now. Like I said, I love it there and always feels much like home away for home for me every time I get out there, which it's been years now for me. Thanks again for sharing, and so happy to hear that you enjoyed it!!

Awesome pics. Leaving tomorrow to drive there. My step daughter is starting college next week at Montana State so we are moving her out there.
Bozeman is a great place as well. Pretty short trip to get to the places we visited. Make sure to make a trip into Butte and look at the statue on the hillside.

The bear population has grown a lot since the last time I was out there. First time I have ever had to carry bear spray.

If anybody stays at a condo or even some hotels check with the front desk. The condo we stayed at had spray we could take with us for free. A lot of people buy the spray and can't take it on the plane home so they take it to the desk and leave it for others to use.

oh yea for sure, when we went to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, we ran into the same thing, one of the lakes in the Grand Tetons was frozen. For the most part Yellowstone is good to go in late June, I would not to during July or August it is just way too busy.

Next trip west will be grand Teton or yellowstone.
We have been in early summer, and in the winter, totally different experiences, both are awesome. If you are going in the summer or fall I would allow at least 3-4 days to see all of Yellowstone, lots of great wildlife viewing in the early mornings for sure. We saw just about everything you can imagine, saw wolves and saw and heard them howl, saw wolf pups with our spotting scope, saw elk, buffalo with calves, Antelope, otters, Black bear and cubs, big horn sheep, Moose with calf, marmot, gophers, pica, Grizzley with 2 cubs with spotting scope, osprey nest with both birds, and mule deer. Yellowstone is absolutely an amazing place.

Figure we will do late October. Summer crowd should be back to early spring levels by then. I've seen twin lakes near Hamilton frozen over in mid June. Crazy stuff for sure lol
