Nancy.

She has been entering the baking contest at the Hartford Fair for about 15 years. Last year was the first time they had the competition since 2019 because of the plandemic. She did not enter last year because life got in the way. Every year she has entered she one a blue ribbon except one year. That year she got second place behind somebody who made the same recipe that Nancy won with the year before. Came in second to her own recipe, lol. I have usually always been working, so I've never gone with her to the "Sweet treats to eat" competition. It was fun. She got first place in the cake division and Best of show with her Cherry Chip cake. She got best of show one other time, but I can't remember what she made that year.

It's a miracle I don't weigh 400 pounds.

The last time she got first place and best of show was in 2016 with a Zucchini blueberry cake. The following year is the year she came in second to her nemesis that won with the same Zucchini blueberry cake! Is coming in second to your own recipe even actually losing?

The Cherry Chip cake is really fuggin' delicious. Those cherries on top are made from Marzipan with red food coloring and mint stalks for the stems. After the contest is over everyone samples all the goodies in the contest. There is one piece of this cake left. I might have to get out the good bourbon at desert tonight.

OF? Which bottle was that of that you poured the other day? Bourbon and cake pair well together, and I imagine especially Cherry Chip 😎🥃👍🏻

I had the last of my OF 1897 with the brownie. Down to Weller or Bulleit Rye tonight, but the Evan Williams might be better with the Cherry Chip cake. I don't have much GOOD bourbon at the moment. I have a bottle of Middle West Pumpernickel Rye on the way here. Middle West is, apparently, a pretty highly regarded distillery in Columbus. Glowingly recommended to Nancy by one of her teacher friends that is a bourbon afficionado. We'll see.

This all started because Cherry Chip cake was Nancy’s favorite birthday cake when she was a kid and she wanted to make one for herself back in February for her birthday. Her mother is a terrible cook, so it was always a boxed cake mix when she was a kid. They do not make that boxed cake mix anymore so she went about finding a base recipe to embellish to her liking. I can scan and email you the recipe whenever you like. She spent more time trying to get the icing just right than the cake.
