Not idiots! Police departments don't have the tools to do that job. My buddy that worked on the street Dept. In Genoa had to do the same thing for the local police. He's a big gun guy also and said it sucked. He used a chop saw though and not torches.

I got on here to post that, but have a post from IG. It was stupid as this post notes, destroying guns, even for PDs, represents an action gun owners hate. It's a dumb move on Benchmades part, especially allowing it to get to social media.

Little difference. He was a city employee. Benchmade volunteered.

Their statement on Facebook, for what it's (not) worth.

SEE OFFICIAL STATEMENT BELOW

Benchmade is aware of the recent post from our local Oregon City Police Department.
-
We apologize for the confusion and concern that this post created. These were firearms that the Oregon City Police Department had to destroy in alignment with their policies. Oregon City Police requested the use of specialty equipment within the Benchmade facility to follow these requirements, and as a supporting partner of our local police force, we obliged the request.
-
Benchmade is a proud and unwavering supporter of both law enforcement and Second Amendment rights. These are commitments that we do not take lightly and will continue to support well into the future.
-
When asked for clarity from Oregon City Police Department, Chief Jim Band made the following statement: ā€œWhen property is to be destroyed, it is the policy of the Oregon City Police Department to destroy property, including firearms, in accordance to our procedures and ORS. The Oregon City Police Department does not sell firearms.ā€

I wasn't aware a standard cutting torch was "specialty equipment". They're still supporting the process of Oregon gun laws, cimfiscations, and buy backs.

And you're right, this doesn't help either looking at their political contributions.

It isn’t like they are taking guns from good people and destroying them. Police departments have been doing this for years, forever kind of years. If a guns used in a crime, it gets destroyed. I can’t hate on benchmade for it. They helped out a local police department. My hats off to them. No one would say a thing if they voluntarily burned drugs for them. I see this on the same level.

Guns used to commit crimes, criminals caught illegally owning them, and also suicides are the biggest contributors. City workers from Perrysburg do the same thing for the local PD.

Agreed. Had they been confiscated under some new crazy gun law because of looks or style I could understand being a little pissed at a company willing to help destroy.
