Cam and I have been been mixing it up between hunting out of double ladder stands and on the ground. I always let him decide which farm to hunt and then we make a plan of attack. With the wind blowing like it was, Cam decided he wanted to hunt on the ground Tuesday night. He decided on an area where I had seen good deer movement on Monday. We found a good spot to hide about 15 yards off the edge of a standing bean field. After a skunk nearly ended our night early, I noticed a doe feeding in the field about 75 yards to the west. We were so well brushed in, we didn’t have a great view of her so I decided to sneak to the edge of the field to get a better look. As I was watching her, a buck soon joined her in feeding on the beans. He slowing walked out of sight around a slight bend in the field and I thought it was all over for the night. Still on the edge of the field about 15 minutes later, I look to my right to see a buck walking right towards me. I was thinking to myself “oh shit....I’m busted”. I got lucky because he stoped to look back at the doe giving me a chance to hit the ground (Cam is still sitting about 10 yards behind me but can’t see the buck). I start army crawling towards him and was able to get close enough to let him know what was going on. As I am flat on my stomach facing Cam, I hear him say “Dad, I can see him” He was able to get the safety off his crossbow and get him in the crosshairs. I was able to turn my head enough to see the deer and knew I had to stop him in the small window we had cleared for a shot. My first attempt failed but was able to stop him with my second try. It seemed like forever from the time the deer stopped and the time he shot but he finally pulled the trigger and all I heard was a “thud”. The deer took off across the beans over a hill and out of sight. After a short tracking job, we had a dead deer. Cam connected on a perfect double lung shot! I am super proud of his dedication and love for the outdoors. The are not many 7 year olds who have the patience and determination as he does. He passed up 2 other bucks and countless does this year before deciding to shoot this guy. It doesn’t get any better than times like this. On to trapping season in a couple of weeks.
