Conservation

This is a subject that comes up on this board all the time, why not have a thread dedicated to it?

Anyways, Joe just had a thread about fishing in Ohio and it got me thinking. At first a thought came to my mind of why don't they teach this in school. Then I thought, why is this the schools job? It's a parenting thing IMO. Maybe they should make an app for that...(different subject all together that gets my heart pumping) At any rate, I might have some info to help someone else and you might have some that will help me, but it has to start somewhere. So here we are, it'll be a free fore all that has anything to do with conservative habits.

I'll start with a quick one about gardening. I don't have a lot of time to dwell on this as I'm sitting at work in the parking lot...

I don't buy hybrids, and this is why-

When you finally get that perfect tomato, don't eat all of it! Harvest the seeds from it for your plants next year.

I have a conversation with my kids every year about how we actually harvest the garden also. We only take what we need at the time and save some for other days. Once we have enough to jar, then we do that also. Because if we harvest everything at one time, we won't have any for other days or years. We have to think ahead. That's what conservation is about to me, the future.

Alright, time to go to work... Please share some thoughts folks. I feel this is a missing link as people seem to only care about today.

I spend alot of time doing conservation related stuff starting February and going into the summer. From planting trees, thinning out undesirable trees, to planting food for the critters. IMO this is what sets us guys on here apart from the majority of the sportsman out there. This stuff never ends for me, and I'm constantly looking for ways to improve the habitat.

For me, it's simple: Leave this earth a better place than you found it. I enjoy working the land in an attempt to create an improved landscape. Part of my garage remodel is having the space to start my garden from seed. In prep for that, I've started composting and recycling. We've cut our trash output by 50% by doing both. It's a synergistic approach. One thing leads to another and before you know it, you're contributing to conservation in a variety of ways.

How about fishing?

It seems over the years I've become about a 90% catch and release guy. (Unless fishing salmon in AK) I haven't kept a big fish in many of years either. I always snap a couple of pics and release it in hopes of it breeding.

I fish for fun almost exclusively. I rarely keep a fish. But I'll eat the shit put of some if you clean them! LOL

Same here, don't really fish much anymore though. A couple years ago we did buy a bunch of bluegill and largemouth from soil and water and I put them in our pond at our land. I don't even know if any survived lol.
