Latest Crop Information
08-15-2011
On August 11th, the USDA released their latest crop reports for Ohio in conjunction with OSU. It will be interesting to see what the markets do in response to the reports. I think the stock market issues will have more effect on prices that this report but by the time this article is printed, we should have some idea.
Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 153.0 bushels per acre, up 0.2 bushel from 2010, and the fourth highest yield on record. Acreage planted for all purposes is unchanged from the June estimate. Area harvested for grain is down less than 1 percent from June but up 4 percent from 2010.
Soybean production is down 8 percent from last year. Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.4 bushels per acre, down 2.1 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in Ohio is down less than 1 percent from June and down 4 percent from 2010.
Also, OARDC recently released their wheat production trial data for 2011. Copies can be picked up at the Extension office on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm or can be found on-line at
http://oardc.osu.edu/wheattrials . This contains the plots in Crawford County which had similar growing conditions to what we experience here in Morrow County.
