hunting and self defense....???

So recently Ohio legalized the use of medical marijuana.... apparently if you get a medical card you can not own a gun according to the federal government. So not only do you have to give up your gun rights but also your right to hunt (with a gun) and the right to defend your family. Can this be possible? What if I used medical marijuana but stopped use before hunting season? If my wife had a medical marijuana card and I owned a gun would she get in trouble if she used it to defend herself if someone broke in to our home? This all seems crazy to me. Can this be possible?

Welcome to the site.

To answer your question. Buying and owning a firearm is a mixture of federal and state law. The issue comes down to the federal law still states that marijuana is an illegal substance and i believe it's named in the 4473 questions... so according to the feds you give up that right when you have the card.

Is it right? That is subject to debate but ultimately needs changed via laws (good luck) or via the courts (good luck and hope you won powerball)

From everything that I have read it seems that using marijuana is the thing they have a problem with not necessarily having the card. Right?

I did some searching this morning on Ohio’s views on this and this is the best I could come up with.

https://ballotpedia.org/Ohio_Marijuana_Legalization_Initiative_(2019)

At the very bottom is some links to contact people that write about such things. I’d suggest taking a little initiative and contacting someone that can quote laws and regulations. Report back with any finding please so we can all be properly informed.

Thanks and good luck
