Shore fishing

Anyone ever have any luck shore fishing? Would like to get some fishing in soon but I don't live close enough to justify buying a boat.

What would be the target species? I've only ever had experience with the western basin. West of Cedar Point to be exact, so I will try and help if I can. Time of year plays a big role also.
