First off, I wish to apologize to @Bowhunter57 for slightly derailing his thread earlier this afternoon, and secondly, I’d like to thank @Mao for bringing it up to my attention once again, mentioning within a responding post and defining some of what a “slob hunter” might actually be, then finally, I also appreciate @giles for suggestion the creation of this a whole new thread regarding the topic.
  • Sorry, Daniel!
  • Thank you, Mao!
  • Thanks, Dave!
I believe this thread may present an opportunity to bitch a little perhaps, or a lot, possibly present some sort of a release and/or potential outlet of sorts for those that have had the pleasure of encountering and/or experienced with such said, a “slob hunter”.

Regardless, I am interested in hearing what hopefully many of you might have to say about such a person, or the term itself and what it means to you.

I truly did not completely understand the term nor know what exactly the full meaning meant until earlier today, after I looked it up on the internet within one of the urban dictionary websites. The following is how they defined it, which I do have some difficulty with some of their interpretation to some extent. Some of their explanation and/or definition seems to be just a bit bias, however, perhaps I am just misunderstanding some of it to some degree, but IDK for certain just yet.

slob hunter
A slob hunter is someone who callously kills wildlife for entertainment and ego-gratification, and revels in killing as many animals as the law allows (or more). These people tend to vote GOP and lack respect for nature in many other realms. To make themselves appear less than evil, they use cover stories about "population control," "game management," "conservation" and "harvesting."

A good example of early slob hunters were the Sharps riflemen who gunned down millions of bison in the 1870s to starve out the Indians. The general practice continues today on that same landscape during prairie dog shoots, where high-powered rifles on bench rests spit ammo for hours and small rodents explode to the sound of high-fives. There are few Indians in sight, but plenty of beer and tailgates. Their cover story is that prairie dogs are pests, even though their population has dwindled by 95%. Everything but Man is subject to that label.

A recent slob hunting development has been the posting of YouTube "kill-shot" videos wherein crass people brag about the mayhem they inflict on animals, often looping it in slow motion. The focus is generally on calibers and ballistics, with the animals being mere targets. Many of the videos have metal soundtracks like video games. You can spot a slob hunting video by the common cry of "nice shot!" after the animal drops on camera. Death by arrow takes a bit longer but the cameras have that covered, too.

Anyhow, I wish that this can be a fun & friendly exchange and hopefully created some meaningful interaction among us fellow hunters/members with hopes of sharing some of your own points of view and/or personal experiences regarding a “slob hunter”, or to simply better define what one is.

Please, no specific names or places need to be mentioned, unless you deem it absolutely necessary to keep it within context.

Also, please excuse my simple ignorance for not knowing any better when I first begged the question on the other thread.

Hopefully, by the time when this thread fades off into the wild blue yonder of the internet abyss, I will have without a doubt, a full and complete understanding what a “slob hunter” truly is and to be on the lookout for them in the future.

Thanks, and please fire away!

No offense Denny, but that article you posted has a massive anti hunting bias to it. Not saying a few things in there aren't accurate, but it screams of a tree hugger.

Hey, no offense taken. It's what I found, and I am sincerely trying to get a better grip on what it means. I agree, sounds bias to me too.

Appreciate your take on it, thanks!

I agree with Red. You found an anti-hunter, libtard definition.

To me, a slob would be the type to leave trash in the field. To shoot running deer in the butt as they scurry away, and then to leave the scene because they do not see the deer drop. To take the back straps from a carcass and leave the rest to rot or be scavenged. To waste the resources and leave the world worse than they found it. To not exercise due diligence. To have little or no respect for wildlife and wild places.
For some reason they are sometimes hard to define but easy to recognize.

There is nothing that I disagree with you about in your sharing, especially with your last sentence. Thanks Brock, I certainly appreciate it!

I am with others on this - this definition above was written to try to deflect the arguments to be had by true, honest hunters - example conservationist, GOP voters, etc. They tried to highlight strong key points the majority of hunters believe in to try to have us all look as “slob hunters”.

As for what I believe a slob hunter is - well to me it is not a hunter, it is a jerk who happens to hunt.

I will not run down hunters on the Internet and give the antis who are scouring the Internet more ammunition to write similar BS definitions as you see published above.

No hard feelings @Wildlife - I know you didn’t write that just my take on how/why it was written.

Trust me, I looked at a couple of different internet sources for the definition of this term, and none of them were well defined that I came across and each seemed to be bias.

This is the reason why I created the thread, hoping that I get a more meaningful, thoughtful or thorough definition and/or shared experiences from some here that will help me better understand, that's pretty much it.

Again, I believe I know what one is, and I believe I would instinctively react and intervene if I were to encounter such as person behaving poorly within my presence.

I appreciate your sharing on the topic, thank you!

Pretty much a person who hunts without the ethics of what "I" consider a hunter. Some fine examples above. Leaving trash in the field. Not respecting the game they pursue. Not adhering to the laws written. Property lines generally mean nothing. Ethics don't apply to them in their eyes. Disciplined shot placement means nothing to them. You get the idea. Typically just a jerk who gives the rest of us a bad name.

They lost me when I read they tend to be or vote GOP!?!? Lmao

How about this anti hunter definition: Those would don’t hunt animals and trash people who do hunt but also eats red, pink and white meat of various wild or domesticated animals they bought in a grocery store. They often tend to vote Democratic and couldn’t survive on a deserted island for 3 hours unless someone built them a fire, killed them some critter, skinned and gutted it for them then cooked the sumbitch for them so they could sleep with a full belly.

Good thread Denny, I hate finding evidence of slob hunters who disrespect land and game too buddy but when I read the part how they voted it triggered me. Lol👍🏻

Hey, made me go, huh? when I first read it too. I agree with you and I too hate it when I find evidence of hunters that simply take advantage and/or abuse the situation to their gain and only hope that karma gets them in the end. I've been known to call the WO & sheriffs on a few in recent years as well.

Thanks for sharing!

Guys who put stands or blinds up within shooting distance of your stands or blinds. You do all the scouting and they take advantage of it.

Man, that's gotta suck! I do not recall that ever happening to me by a stranger, just only my younger brother :ROFLMAO:. Yeah, he did that to me a couple of times, and not just hunting, but fishing too.

A lot of good examples listed such as littering and “get an arrow in them “ mentality , I would like to add -hunters who teach their children the same bad ethics they use, not buying proper license or tagging. Not checking trap lines appropriately and letting animals suffer. Engaging in illegal hunting activity with your children, then justifying it and I’m not talking about walking across a property line to an retrieve animal. Shit drives me nuts

Just my opinion Denny. The stuff Fletch is dealing with fire the description as well. Or others hunting your stand. Or hanging stands on the property line AND shooting across the line. Or using spotlights on deer. Coons and coyotes I understand. Not sure the definition has a closed description.

Honestly especially northwest Ohio every single stand is on a property line due to how woods and tree lines are layer out.Every single permission or lease I have has property line stands on them by all participants it’s unavoidable. Same with public land, it’s public your license and mine pays for that land we must share and get along

Thanks fellas!

I hope that I'm not the only one that will have some takeaways from this thread. I honestly believe seeing what has been shared already are at the very least excellent reminders of what to look out for while afield as hunters.

I also welcome actual shared experiences as well and how you dealt with the situation so perhaps I, and others may learn from your experience and/or recommendation.

I do have a couple myself that I will share them tomorrow. Other than that, I appreciate all that participated thus far, thank you!

Good night!

You didn’t trigger me but whomever wrote that hunk of garbage did so my post wasn’t towards you Denny.👍🏻
I agree with Phil that Rich is having issues with a slob hunter or two on the land he’s hunting Casper on. Lots of good posts on the matter. Even Sarges point on the White Claw. Lol
