Conservancy buys 440 acres to connect Strouds Run with other rec lands

"The Athens Conservancy on June 17 used a Clean Ohio grant to purchase 440 acres of land adjoining the eastern boundary of Strouds Run State Park.
According to a news release announcing the purchase, it “will protect excellent wildlife habitat and provide new recreational opportunities for hikers, birders, nature photographers and others who enjoy low-impact outdoor activities.”

The new acquisition connects the park with the 269-acre Baker tract (private land on which the Conservancy holds an unusual conservation easement that permits public access). Although the new preserve is open to the public, it currently has no trail access or parking area. The release said the Conservancy would like to make the land more accessible by working with community volunteers to connect the existing network of trails in the newly acquired land with the trail systems in the state park and Baker tract.
Once this is done, “it will be possible to hike from Sells Park to Ohio Rt. 690 entirely on trails, a distance of more than eight miles, without crossing a road,” Athens Conservancy board member Phil Cantino said in the release.

The new preserve is mostly wooded and offers a diversity of habitat for native plants and animals, including old and young forest, scenic rock formations, and two perennial tributaries of the Hocking River (1.5 miles of stream bed), the release said."

Awesome! I assume hunting is allowed like on the other parts of the conservatory.
Kind of...this is all connected to the same people I’m part of in my area. I posted on here a while back about a guy buying up all the property in the area. We will see how this all ends up.

Deer only,Bowhunting only.
That’s what I’m hearing. Deer only because they eat the native plants. It’ll be signed permission, with one person in charge of the hunters. They have multiple properties in the area and will all fall to the same rules until a deer level of their liking is met. Doe will be the focus of the deer reduction program.

I will also suggest you read the OP again, with a tree hugging view. Preserving the land and plants is the number one goal. Deer hunters are a tool to help reach the end goal.

Last year when looking to see if we could hunt on the conservatory property during the gathering I found something on their site that said it was open to bowhunting. I don't recall anything about permission slips though, and it may not apply to this tract. But I remember thinking nit was allowed.

I believe the state owns that one, these ones are privately owned and managed by a private group. This group also manages some state lands in my area.

A private person or persons put up most of the money and the grant matches a certain percent to purchase the property and preserve it.

It’s a program that is working and I’d much rather see this than what modern farming looks like.

Well...that is good news. I have tromped and hunted the surrounding area pretty well. I can’t believe it sold.

Guess I’ll see about getting a slip for the new part

This is what I read last year regarding the Blair conservancy bordering strouds run. Says that it open to hunting.

http://www.athensconservancy.org/aaorg/ac-blair.html

But then on this page it talks about their hunting permission and has no mention of that.

That is a section I didn’t even know about. I knew Blair was bought out a couple of years ago, but I was unaware that it was public access now. Blair also owned a parcel across Strouds road...hmmmmm

Conservation groups can be fun to deal with. All depends who holds the land at the time what rules you gotta play by. I wouldn't consider this strouds gaining more ground as I doubt you can just skip across the boundary free will. I'm sure many will though.
I have one close by. Gotta have permission and to request it you have to state which days you are wanting to hunt. No scouting opportunities or anything like that. It's really just for the board members families to use as they're always the only ones there.

Methods, equipment, bait all restricted as well. Generally, you aren’t wanted to be there by the hikers either. I believe this will be my 5th year in the program and the rules get a little tighter every year. EHD hurt the place I hunt and they shut it down for hunting last year. So they have an interest in some deer being around. Program was real aggressive to start with, but it was needed on the property I’m on.

Yeah it seems if you dont know the actual owners and or board members it becomes more like a country club quick. But hey, cant complain, at the end of the day it is private land owned by an individual or trust of some sort so gotta play by their rules and that's ok cause I didnt pay for it. It should make the area around it better as deer will continue to use it as a sanctuary unless it really gets pounded by trespassers.

The 200 acres I’m part of has 6 hunters and we generally have a 10 deer minimum every season. So the property gets pounded pretty heavy. Earn a buck program enforced. We have slaughtered the herd. Trying to kill that many deer with open hiking trails, other hunters and no bait...the word “sanctuary” is kinda misleading😂.

I still enjoy it though and hope to be part of it again this year!
