Last weekend I was hunting at Letterkenny Army Depot. A 76 year old hunter was using a climbing stand when the accident happen. I heard the stand broke but that is 2nd or 3rd hand info.

He fell 15 feet crushing his pelvis and sustaining a serious head injury. A friend of mine was near by and helped as best he could. The hunter was flown out on a life flight helicopter.

He was wearing a harness but it was not attached while he was climbing. He died from the injuries.

Im sure we have all made the same mistake. Please take a moment to make sure you are tied to the tree before your feet leave the ground.

Not worth not being attached from bottom to top. Especially for someone that old. I know breaking a hip is usually a death sentence for the elderly, I'm sure pelvis is just as bad.

Terrible. Life line or lineman belt regardless. Also take your stands down annually and inspect for rust and other failure. Obviously this was a climber situation but totally could’ve been prevented.
