Tactics for gun season

I started to get frustrated that I haven't shot a nice buck yet this year. I just had to laugh at myself, take a couple days off from hunting and adjust my attitude. Almost forgot I'm supposed to be having fun! Whole new attitude now and ready for some late season buck deer chasin!

I haven't been in the woods for over 2 weeks. And I still won't be able to get out till Friday. I'm planning to sit on a local spot Friday morning, and then join a buddy from work on a couple drives in the afternoon around his place over by killdeer Plains. Probably switch that up on saturday, meet him in the morning and sit my place in the evening. Redcloud will be joining us on Sunday, so I'll leave it up to him if he wants to go to my buddies place all day or sit around here for part of it.

I was never a huge fan of drives until 2 years ago when my buddy invited me to go with him, his dad, brother, and a few other guys. It's actually a lot of fun if it's done right and everyone is on the same page as far as where everybody is going to be standing and pushing.

Forced to hunt public as usual so I'll be painted orange and hunting the other bumbling hunters. Post up on escape routes, ravines, bottoms, etc. Not ideal but you gotta do what you gotta do lol. It paid off at 7:10 opening morning last year

I will be driving around looking for trespassers. I'll likely hunt at some point. I'm ready to throw in the towel. My attitude really sucks right now. Carrying a gun and getting lucky is my tactic. That is a pretty horrible tactic in my eyes. I have failed as a hunter. Hoping to get lucky is not hunting to me. This is not the place I wanted to be right now. BUT. . . I am thankful for what I do have. I do have a couple nice properties. I do have a tag. I have my health. I have my son to get on a deer if he chooses to do any hunting. I could be just fine if we don't tag another deer in regards to our freezer. Life isn't all bad. Just my outlook so i am done typing.
Phil my plan is calling you to help me drag a deer out. Lol

You are sounding like Ric,lol
That means you will be shooting something soon.
It's a long season just hunt when ya can.
Lmao. I hope you are right. You, Rick, Ric, Ron. . . There are a lot of fine examples on here to emulate. I'll take it as a compliment. It IS a long season. There CAN be many highs and lows throughout our long season. I need to just suck it up. I like Kaiser but don't want to sound like him concerning gun season. I need to look at it as an opportunity. It is a change of pace, scenery, tactics, and should be a change in attitude for the better. Life is good.

Life IS good. Don't let an enjoyable hobby get you bummed out!

Well sounds like someone is lol
Negative ghost rider. Antlers don't define me. Trespassers and slobs just take a lot of the fun out of it for me. Not starting a debate. There are trespassers and slobs who carry guns and bows. My goal to get my son on his first buck is my main priority right now. If I hesitate to take him out because I fear for his safety. . . .It zaps the fun out of it.

Then how have you failed as a hunter? I'm lost lol. You should get Garrett on that 6 point, that would make your season for sure.

You have my number. Please do if you shoot one! Buck or doe. I want to enjoy the gun season. If I can help enjoy someone else's success it will bring a big smile to my face. That would be awesome Mike. Plus, J is right. I owe you a couple drags. Lol

I have failed as a hunter because "I" am at the point of relying on luck to get on the deer I was hunting. That comes down to ME being down on ME. Everyone has different goals. I am very competitive. I am competitive with myself. I am goal oriented. I have failed at my goal to get it done before gun season. The deer won. It isn't about antlers or size of them. It is about achieving goals. I personally didn't achieve my personal goal. The deer won this round. IF I tag one of my target bucks at this point it will be pure luck. Not because I outsmarted them. At the end of the day, it likely appears very petty to those who don't know me. If this is my biggest frustration, life is pretty good.

Garrett hadn't shown much desire to hunt until youth weekend. I can't change that. He has to want that. I won't force it on him. Now that he is showing some desire to hunt, I am refocusing. My new goal is to get him on a buck. He has no standards. Spike, forkhorn, basket rack. . . He would be happy. He just wants to tag "a buck." That brings happiness to me, but if I fear his safety it is bothersome. Maybe he and I will end up in the tree house. Putting a land owner tag on a deer would rock!

I am also competitive and set goals for myself. Wasn't sure what you were getting at so that's why I asked. Good luck to you and Garrett!

I agree. And if I can help Mike R drag a deer out it will bring a big smile on my face. If I can help Garrett tag his first buck I will be ecstatic! Just struggling to have fun at the moment. Sitting out the first day. Then focusing on having fun. If I get lucky then I get lucky. I want to enjoy it. Just need to shake the funk off. Maybe I can hook up with some buddies and tag team hunt a bit. That is fun.

I'm hopeing pressure from other properties will pack deer onto two specific properties. My back 8 and another spot close to home.

If I didn't feel like ass I'd be heading out a good hour before sun up tomorrow and planting ass.

I'll also be dropping in on these d-bags I had the pleasure of 'meeting' last year to make sure they aren't f'n with my land owner buddy.

Excited to kick off the second half of the season!
