You guys know I like to geek out on stuff. So pigs were introduced in FL by the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto in 1539 when they brought them over for food. Pigs were perfect with their high survivability for the trip, rather self-sustaining foraging abilities, and a prolific reproducer. After a while they were free-range and as people moved to new settlements oftentimes most of the pigs were left behind. Most have strong Eurasian boar genetics. Long snout, black hair, and the classic Eurasian razorback look. But even 485 years later they throw genetic signs of their heritage in their markings. The sow John shot has a white stripe reminiscent of an ancient breed of pig from Italy called the Cinta Sense. The Cinta Senese predates the Roman empire, yet here this sow is throwing Cinta Senese genetics. Or the markings came from the Hartford breed brought to America later around the time of Christopher Columbus which has the same genetic lineage from Europe.
