Sheera the Doe

I don't know what's going on with the hair on this deer, but she has all these dark patches all over her body. None of the other deer that show up on my cam have hair like this... they all have uniform coloring. I only have one daytime video of her, and it's not a very good one due to the shadows. I have hundreds of pics and videos of this doe, ever since late June, and her coloring has been the same ever since. Anybody else see deer like this or have any ideas what it could be? I named her Sheera because it looks like leopard print to me LOL.

Any other deer show up around the same time? Did it rain those evenings? It may just be that her coat is wet.

Yep, several other deer were there that night... no rain, no fog, no mist... she's looked this way ever since the first pictures I got of her back in the spring. I just kind of blew it off because, like you, I figured it must be something simple... like rain, or shedding hair, etc... but it hasn't changed now in months. I know she's not piebald because the daytime footage doesn't show white, but the patches are definitely darker than the rest of her. I'll try to upload some other comparative footage later.

Could it be thin hair spots from maybe having an allergy or mange ? That's the best guesses I can come up with.

Seriously- I can only give a guess at it. Ever see a kid in school that had a streak of blond or patch of gray? Sometimes there are just funky genetic traits that come out in people. I would have to guess this is something similar. Nothing at all scientific to back it up. As I stated, this is just a guess. Only thing I can think of.

Obviously, she is an older doe so that throws out being a fawn. But my guess it that it has something to do with her fawn spots and how they disappeared. I wonder if it is also not tied to the skin. I would think it would be relate to either one. It could be skin discoloration caused from a birth defect or disease. Or when her fawn spots began to transform, something in the process cause them to darken beyond her normal pigmentation; again maybe disease or skin thing that showed up at that point.

Just come hare-brained guesses on my part...

After pouring through a thousand or so pictures last night, I guess I was wrong about having pictures of her back in the late spring. I must have been confused with a different deer that looked all scraggly. I'm thinking it's either related to her skin, like Jesse said, or she's just a little late changing into her winter coat. It's difficult to tell because pretty much every picture and video I have of this deer is well after dark, so they're all infrared images. I moved my cam onto the big food plot the other day so maybe I'll get some better pics. Actually, this gives me a good reason to put a bulleye on her... the best way to figure this thing out is to put my skinnin knife to work.
