Prayers needed for two high school boys

Prayers sent Mike. So sad, I take it they weren't wearing their seatbelts?

No, they weren't. There were actually three kids in the car. The detalis keep coming in and, with it being word of mouth, things keep getting twisted. The driver was ejected through eith the windshield or the side window. The front seat passenger had his belt on and came out with just scratches. The backseat passenger went oput either the back or side window. I'll know more tomorrow at school.

I do know the boy in the backseat is the one that broke his neck (C2 and C3) and back. My baseball assistant is also the offensive coordinator. He went to the hospital in Pittsburgh last night (that is where the two ejected were life flighted to). He called me on his way home and said the one had a severed cord in his lower back and is paralyzed from the waist down. They were taking him in for emergency surgery (it was originally schedled for today) because the boy said he was loosing feeling in his arms and hands. The surgery was to try and save his mobility in his upper body. Hopefully, in regard to his upper body, it was just swelling causing the loss of feeling in his arms. The sad news is that the docotrs have ruled out him walking again.

The next time you don't want to buckle up, keep this story in mind. The boy that buckled up is fine physically, but he will have to live with this horror the rest of his life. A side note... the boy the buckled up is our head football coach's son and a good friend of mine. It is just amazing how fast a life can change.

Please, tell your teenagers this story and remind them to buckle up. The last phone call we ever want to get as parents is the one these parents got yesterday.

Some relatively good news...
I just got a call that he has feeling back in his arms and he is feeling pain in them. that's good.
The bad news is the doctors told him this morning that he will not walk again. So sad...

Damn Mike, hard too take that.... Never being able too do what he once could has too be a tough situation for that young man.....

Thanks for the link Cotty, I'm glad to see people stepping up to help, especially 2 big names like Drake and Zach. I'll continue praying for the kids and their families. Sad, sad news.

Only one boy remains in the hospital and that is the one that is paralyzed. He just went through another surgery to try and aleviate pain in his lower back, however... there were some complications and it seems he worsened. I just received a text that he has less than a 5% chance of walking and it will take 12-18 months before they know if he will have any feeling at all in his legs, but it looks very doubtful.
In regard to his upper body it will take 6-12 months before they know if he can use his hands. Right now they have a plate under his chin holding his head up.

I just couldn't imagine... Please continue to keep Justin in your thoughts and prayers. It's going to be a very long road to recovery and his family and friends, as well as him, will need a lot of strength.

Here are a few links to local stories: The last article is from our sports editor and is pretty powerful.

This might seem a little off subject, but how is the family as far as insurance goes? I can't imagine the kind of hospital bills they are racking up.

Steve,
I'm not sure how their insurance is. I do know they will have a court case on their hands that should work in their favor. Since speed has been ruled a factor it could mean money for the family.
The family is in so much shock right now. So many things to think of... their house is two story and very small, they will need a van, home health care, trips to Pittsburgh for physical therapy, etc...

It is amazing what has been going on around the valley here. Local school are organizing fundraisers and many schools have been collecting at basketball games. For example, I got a call from a coach at St. Clairsville down the river that they collected over $500 at their basketball game Tuesday night. Our biggest rival, Steubenville, is putting together a spaghetti dinner through their Key Club. Just some great displays of generousity from the locals here.

Generousity is a powerful and wonderful event. My sister and my neice were on the receiving end of this once when my neice had brain cancer. Our small town raised $ 25K at a spaghetti dinner and auction benefit. At the end of the night they gave all the proceeds to my sister to help cover medical expenses, living expenses, travel to hospital, etc. I helped out at the dinner but most of all I sat back and watched over 1000 people contributing to help my family in need. Three years later all I can still say is "WOW!". I still tingle from the emotion of generousity. For those that don't know my 9 year old neice went to visit Jesus 9 months after diagnosis.
