Looking forward to this section. I'm in the process of putting together a hunter survivalist kit now for an out of state hunt. Once I get my kit complete I will start a new thread with the items I have in it.

I like to make firestarted with dryer lint and vaseline. Works better than any store-bought fire starter you can find. A little messy to make, but I recommend it.

My wife doesn't do much laundry so that really cuts down on the lint production. I was just going to melt some Vaseline and soak some cotton balls in it. I heard that works well.

Is there even a need to melt the vaseline? It is already viscous enough to work with it... as far as the lint.... check yo' belly button. ;)

Or just go to the laundromat.

Not sure what the need is as I have never made them. I envisioned that melting it would allow mento pour it and may absorb better into the cotton balls.

Well when I did the lint up, I just grabbed a gob of vaseline and started mashing lint into it. Like I said, messy, but it works great. I am sure it would be the same with cotton balls, just a little less messy. Shouldn't need to melt the vaseline, but if you feel like trying it, lemme know how it goes.

I have tried the dryer lint and Vaseline as well as dryer lint (or cotton balls) and wax poured into plastic egg cartons. Also had luck w/ wax soaked hemp rope. When I was a kid, my grandfather taught me to make fire starters from spent, cardboard shot gun shells, wax and heavy string.

Try some cattails. Pick some extra during the summer for a stockpile to have for winter time while your at it. You can take a cattail and break it apart and light the fluffy insides just fine. On top of that..if you need to move your campsite you can take a cattail and ignite the end of it and it will just smolder and will last some time this way. When you get to the new campsite you break off the unused bottom section fluff it out and then take the smoldering top place it into the fluffy bundle and blow a couple small puffs onto the smoldering part and poof a new fire :D.
